Welcome to Oh, brother, a podcast where we try to figure it all out with your hosts, Brandon. And Colin. On this week's show. This is not surprising. Oh boy,
Brandon 00:18
the boy how's it going?
00:21
It's going pretty good. How are you?
Collin 00:23
I am well zoom has told me that it has updated and has a new and fresh look. But it's okay.
Brandon 00:33
Google has been telling me that for this whole like two weeks now I was just like look at art new look like, guys. It's it's still white box. Like it's more rectangular, I guess. But as far as like, drastic UI interface updates. This ain't it, bro. So I feel like you need to calm down. I'm glad you're feeling yourself and say meat. Like if your stick is like sleek minimalism changing the proportions of your rectangle. Not like groundbreaking, right? I'm not just like blown away by this. Like,
Collin 01:19
it's it's really hard to get more minimalist. It's
Brandon 01:23
yeah, right. Like,
01:24
what are you doing?
Collin 01:28
Rate design language to really dig into. Yeah, not a whole lot is weird.
Brandon 01:37
It's like, check out learn more like I don't need to learn more about this. I don't. It's different. That's all I really need to know. Good. Good. Yeah, I'm good. I don't need like extra. Like, I'm so weird. Yeah. Yep. Man.
Collin 02:06
That's always something. Yeah. So I was trying to I didn't do the update on on this before. And so I was just staring at it. And while I was waiting, I was sitting here waiting for everything to kind of come online. I was really trying to stare at what was different and I was like, ah, there's a whole lot of nothing on that. So but yeah, Google, really just
Brandon 02:32
I'm glad that they're proud of themselves. You know, they're really feeling it. Like come on, man. Like I don't know what
Collin 02:45
now, no, no, just why do we have to change so much? So?
02:54
I don't know. It's but
Collin 02:56
then then I see that like, Toyota is still producing like the same Landcruiser in Australia, but they have been producing since the 19. forevers and you're like, yeah, that's that would be really nice to have here.
Brandon 03:17
Because they still now Yeah, yeah, it's not possible. But you have to remember 90 plus percent of Australia is just desert Yeah, and so that's the thing you know, do you need like your market really doesn't need your like newfangled like rear view camera triple mount thing like now 360 view right yeah. Overhead view bam. They were they do hit a wallaby like No, that'd be fine like that's like some other problems we have to overcome here like it's 12,000 degrees that's it that's the problem that's already
Collin 04:10
really hot. And really dusty.
Brandon 04:16
really dusty. It's like, like large things of dust just like there it's really weird. I like trap. trap dust. Waiting to swallow you up. Yeah, mostly.
Collin 04:40
Speaking did you get blown away today by the storms coming through?
Brandon 04:43
So yeah, we had storms today, but it wasn't like super bad. Right. I think a lot of it was like north or us, I guess. I guess just north of us a little bit. It's like like really not very far away. It's actually like flooding a lot. So I apparently they just missed us. Because literally feet away. They're like, Oh my gosh, the street is flooded. Like we didn't really? That's weird. This is awkward because we're good. Yeah, so it's been a bit it's a weird, it'd be a weird weather we can hear. Oh, yeah, boom, the triple dub. Excuse me as like? I don't know exactly, but like storminess much more stormy tomorrow, potentially?
Collin 05:38
Uh huh.
Brandon 05:40
That's what I've been saying to. Yeah. We'll have to see how it goes. But it's four day weekend. Which is nice, but also slightly inconvenient. Yeah. So Well, yeah. Cuz we're doing state testing next week. So we're coming. Somebody, I don't know who scheduled this wasn't me. We're gonna come back from a four day weekend, and then we're gonna have a test on Tuesday.
Collin 06:20
That way, they can be more more, more well, or good or,
Brandon 06:24
like, I guess maybe it's partially our fault. But I don't really know who's stuck a four day weekend, just like right here. Like I'm, you know, we only have like a week left of school, which is fine. But like, I like weekends. Because it is this time of year is very, like, sloggy. Right? And it's like, it's just like, and so, but it's just, it's gonna be really awkward to come back from a big four day weekend, and has test. So that's not going to be great. I mean, it is what it is, at this point, there is no good day. To do. Right. Right. Like, it's going to be what it's going to be, we're just gonna go for it, you know, like, there's nothing, you know, like, we'll just do whatever. So that's the big menu for next week. Testing and, yes. So are
Collin 07:24
you going to be, are you going to be proctoring more of those or kind of,
Brandon 07:28
I'm going to do a small group room, right? Like, I'm going to be pulling out some kids where, because like, I don't know, I don't know, if I teased the English lady, because I'm like, I just don't trust me anymore. I guess I don't know what happened. But like, they we used to do a couple of years, we just did our home rooms, we just tested them, all right. But they she wanted to do it differently, whatever. So she wanted the English people to test with her. You know, so whatever. But um, so the, we're going to have three groups, this time, they're going to have, they split most of them into two groups. And then like an A and a B, right. And so like a, on Tuesday, a will do like ELA, and then B will do math. And then on Thursday, a will do math, and B will do ELA, right, they're gonna flop them that way. Ah, but there's also some other pullout groups. So like I said, kids are going, they're testing in a separate setting altogether. I'm gonna do like a smaller group of some of the kids that like, they just probably need less distraction in their life. Right? They mean, they do better in like a smaller setting. It's like quieter and they like, even more quiet and like, they just don't have other people around them. Yeah, so like, five, like, six, seven kids. Like, I'm gonna test them in a separate room. So I'm doing like a mini group test.
Collin 09:02
That's, that's nice to make those accommodations for those who really need it.
Brandon 09:06
And it won't be as bad as the ACG because there's like much more frequent break time. Right? It's very nice. So I will continue to have like break times, we'll have lunch breaks and stuff. So we try to spread it out throughout the whole day as much as possible. Right, like, like, we kind of want to get it all done. And we kind of want them to be in the mode all day. But we also want to make sure they have breaks in between, like sessions, you know, I mean, yeah. Do you like one section? Have a break? Come back and do another section. Have another break? Right, like, right breaks or? Yeah, we tried to do like that. So. So like we'll still have recess and we'll still have like, all that other stuff. So that's the plan to try to get them to do that.
Collin 09:55
And what subjects what subjects are being tested on?
Brandon 09:58
Sixth grade, sixth grade is just ELA, English language arts and math. Okay, they don't do they don't they still use science in fifth and eighth grade? Right. So it's kind of weird. The way that the standards are broken up by the state. It's like, there's just like a big huge brick. And they like, Huh? These are the six through eight standards like, oh, K. Oh, wow. Like all the all the other grade levels. They're like, this one is this year. This is third grade. This is fourth grade. This is fifth grade. And they're like, these are all six, eight, whatever. Oh, all right, like get them all done before eighth grade. Go, go, go go like, Ah, dang it. I don't know.
Collin 10:48
That's not helpful.
Brandon 10:50
Not really, but it's all right. I think we haven't split up pretty good. So I don't know. All right. But yeah, no test this year for science sadness. List. Yeah. I mean, um, take their science test today, though, get another way. Didn't have to do it. Next week of all that right. Like, ah,
Collin 11:15
take that. It's for the best. It's really mean.
Brandon 11:18
Yeah. I mean, it's much more lucky and like, much smaller. But like, now is a weird time where I'm like, Okay, I have like, a couple of weeks left, and we're gonna do like our stream unit stuff. Right? You know, it's kind of like, fun, you know, kind of culmination of all the stuff we've been doing all year. But I'm also like, trying to think about, what am I going to do for next year? Like, what changes do I need to make? What things do I want to do? Like that kind of stuff. So I'm trying to, like, it's a weird mode into your mode is annoying and strange, because you're trying to think about, like, lots of things at the same time. And it's like, I know, if I don't write some of these things down, and it's like, put them in something I will not remember. Later, which is a problem because okay, I halfway through the year be like, oh, yeah, I want to do that correct. Okay, now I gotta go back and start again. So I'm trying to kind of think about that. Think about, like, what I want to do whatever whatever, like, but nothing like drastic, right? Just like little things. I don't want to move this around, or whatever. We're gonna see. When I send the kids a survey, I think about the side quest things, right? And just like, kind of get a feel about like, was there any that you were just like? No, that wasn't really very good. Just to see, to kind of think about, is there any that I need to replace or do I need to move the sequence around somewhere? Yeah. What so like, it's overall, it's been pretty good. They're not happy with me right now. Because our last one is our last one is like a video project. I have called it building a better internet. Right? And it is that they must make a short form video. Right? But it has to be like, talking about science facts, like factual science information, in short form video, right? Because as we know, if you've ever been on the internet, a lot of those are really bad. And they're terrible. Or they're like, trying to tell you why the earth is flat. You're like, bro, what it's like trawl down a real deep rabbit hole all of a sudden where people are trying to tell you that space isn't real. It NASA is just like a CGI manufactured thing. You're like what? Yeah, somebody hurt you. And we have some other issues we have to work through here guy like anyway, we're very deep, very deep rabbit hole right? These people clearly are mad at like, the secret government. Right? But like nobody's told them like you can be just you can be mad at the actual government like they're they suck to like, you don't have to be bad at like, a secret group of people like the actual group people you can be like, Yo, do better. Are you doing like, that's allowed? Like very strange. Conspiracy Theory land is very strange. But anyway, we're doing the short form video contest, right not contest, but like they're doing a short form science video, but I may have forgot to tell them that once they submit their video Get to me. I am posting them on Google classroom for the entire sixth period to look at. So. That's great, great fun. It's fun. I got it. We can't let them go to waste. Right. Some of them are hilarious. And so I need the I need everyone else to see how great they are, right? I could take class time, and say today we're going to watch these three videos. Or I can just throw them up there. And they can just watch them as many times as they want.
Collin 15:39
Which is what you which is what one should do. I
Brandon 15:41
mean, I think so. I think this is the move. Right? But they are okay. Because after the quiz, I was like anybody who needs to work on the video. We have time to do that today. Also, I posted all of your videos so you guys can watch each other's now and they all went well. You watch.
16:03
Oh, did I? Not? I mentioned that I forget that part. Right. And I mentioned and see do you
Brandon 16:10
can all see them? There they're like for the classes like no for everyone for the whole sixth grade. And then like your walk Yeah, everybody needs to be part of it. But it's important. So that's all right. Well, I've been up to today.
Collin 16:35
Sounds very fascinating.
Brandon 16:43
Meetings experience Mattamy best hobby.
Collin 16:51
So one that keeps on giving. That's for sure. Really does.
Brandon 16:55
You just it's like you'd never run out. Right? You'll never be like, oh, man, I can't do that anymore. Now. There's always things. Right. It's great. But yeah, not super exciting. times here. Right, like winding down. And a lot of this like, weird random nonsense to try to pawn off my bookshelf on people. Because I don't want it anymore. Oh,
17:22
no. What? Okay.
Brandon 17:24
Well, I have, like, when I became a teacher, right? Here's what happened. Like, they were like, I like a lot of random people in the school were like, Oh, you need to have books in your room. And then just like dumped books on me. Right? Unwanted four books? Yeah. Once books. Yeah. Hey, yeah. And so like, these are all like, like grade level readers, right? Like, fictional books, right. I am also currently calling the nonfiction section because, as we talked about, oh, boy, there is some beautiful out of date things. We keep a couple of just for last, but like historical. Yeah, look, for some of them. The ones that the ones that? I had. I didn't I think I got rid of some of them. But I did show Susan some of the ones that are. They were like old library books. And they still had the card in them. And they were like, people that are older than Susan that like they were in the last year. She's like, Oh my gosh, these people that's fantastic. We're getting another fifth grade teacher. And so I was like, Hey, do you want some books? Because she was like, like any of them. I was like, person with on any this shelf right here? Take any of them that you want. Oh, no. She was like, Well, what if someone else wants them? I was like, I'm only asking you. If that's right, only you and if you don't want them, they will disappear. And she was like, alright. But I mean, I want to turn my bookshelf in like we don't really read them, right number one, that ELA teacher in sixth grade has just more books then you can possibly know what to do with a like that. So I don't really need them in a science capacity, right. You know, just not really the vibe. I would rather focus on like nonfiction books, just to have around for like reference material. Well, sure, you know, so I'm going to try and turn that shelf into like the project shelf. Right so when we have just stuff Instead of it laying all over my floor everywhere. Oh, come on, you're gonna have ups. I mean, I don't normally care what times this year I was like, oh my god, what is happening? And then they, because they're irresponsible little angels, right? They just lay it somewhere. And then they're like, somebody told me took my stuff. I was like, where did you put it? And they're like, in the middle of that pile of all the other stuff. And gee, I wonder what could have happened. Thank you ask no one's at that point jabs. No one could have guessed that could happen.
Collin 20:39
Not surprisingly, not even a little bit.
Brandon 20:46
So, maybe we can organize something into a more like, maybe we'll see. But I'll have an empty shelf. And then maybe we can use that for Project things. So like, as we have the science side quest things or like other just class projects, in general, we can have a place to put them while we're in the middle of making. That's the goal here. We'll see how well this works out. But that's the plan.
Collin 21:21
Well, yeah, I mean, the at least have something to aspire to. And I think I think at least having that will be beneficial to you. We can point to like, no, no, it's not pile, right? We are trying to
Brandon 21:35
not be pile, right? Yeah. Yeah. I don't know, if I'm gonna get bins or if I'm just gonna like, I don't know, I don't know exactly the plan. But I need shelf space. And I have none. And so vacating a lot of literature that nobody in my class is using, and have not used for several years. Right. That's the other important part of this. Like, it's not like they know it didn't use it this year. It's that we'd never use. Yeah, so it's just kind of in the way and taking up space. And so I kind of just need to let it go away, be gone. And see what happens, right. That's what I need to do. And then focus on my nonfiction section. Hopefully, I would like to get into a place where it's like, more appropriate books that are sort of like by unit or something, right. So that I can just be like, Oh, hey, if you want to know, if you want to, like have like, extra things to do, you can read this box. Lamb.
Collin 22:45
Where the point? Yeah, to point to that, yeah, that'd be that'd be,
Brandon 22:49
I'm having like, sectioned off. Because right now they're in like, milk crates, right. So the ultimate goal, which would require a lot of work, and so I don't know how I feel about this currently, but to have them be like, Oh, this is all like, you know, certain certain, like, all of these are like a certain type of like, the All of these are like weather science related. Bam, you don't mean so that you could just like point them in a direction as like, if you have extra time, if you want to have extra reading time, if you understand, we can use these now. You can like get them out and like have them around, that would be much more useful, I think, than just sitting in a corner. So that's the ultimate goal. I don't know how motivated I am to actually get that part. But I think at least have a plan. And the first call has already happened. So that's a good step in the right direction. Okay. That
Collin 23:47
space kind of already will open up just a little bit. Thinking of all the possible
Brandon 23:51
possibilities. Yeah. So that's been kind of handy. Like to get these things out here, like, so much. I don't like getting rid of stuff like that. But that kind of stuff. Like I don't really need, I guess all of these other big bins of this like, stuff. And I don't even know 100% What's in all of them still, because I don't use them very much. But every once in a while, I'm like, oh, I need this and I go rummaging around in there and I grabbed something out of it. So it's you know, it's fine. It's just an organized and haphazard but like, oh, I need a couple blocks of wood. I got that in this bin over here. Hold on. I'm just gonna do
Collin 24:47
that when you like when you find yourself rummaging, I think you've kind of lost the plot. It's fine. It's just
Brandon 24:52
all this stuff I inherited and it's like, oh, this is good for something. Wonderful. What? Anyway, I Put it over here. It's like and find out what's one of those situations Right? Like, like I found the other day, a giant box of like, not giant, but a box of like, D batteries, unknown age and origin. So I'm imagining I have all these batteries are there probably none of them work. And I don't know what a person needs D batteries for,
Collin 25:32
you're not going to have your kids test them.
Brandon 25:35
I mean, enough, I trust this particular group to just do a lot of electrical testing. I think maybe that's
Collin 25:41
Oh, it's just a meter, right? You're just putting them?
Brandon 25:46
Yeah, they'd find a way to do that wrong. The more reliable test would be like put them in these flashlights and see if they turn off.
Collin 25:53
That's a fair point. Fair point.
Brandon 25:57
can't stab anybody with a flashlight. So this is like a random into the year mode where I'm just like, I don't know. Plus, I'm like, Why haven't you turned your assignment
Collin 26:17
in yet, get over here, I'm gonna read each of you and Edie have a gift. Right, where you just find yourself trying to corral everything and still stay on target and hit things but also like recognizing all the immense limitations that you're faced with, with constraints. And and I don't think many people really appreciate the like, just how quickly, attention spans deteriorate towards the back end there.
Brandon 26:49
Your mind to write?
Collin 26:51
Exactly. It's not all just to kids?
Brandon 26:55
Oh, no. It's all mine. So yes, this is where we are currently just sort of this, like, mopping up mode. Like I have a lot to do not have it's like, not real motivated, do some of that. And we have this roadblock tested way. So you know.
Collin 27:21
Well, you said, you said milk crate, and I have a milk crate in my house. And it's filled with assorted items, Z things and stuff. And Lillian had asked if we had something and I said, it's in the milk crate. And then I realized she doesn't know what a milk crate is. So I have to tell you, Oh, right. You've never
Brandon 27:46
right, you have
Collin 27:47
one of these in your home. You just don't know what it's called. So I need to inform you what this is. Like. It's the milk crate my office filled with April's is
28:01
probably the chair.
Collin 28:04
So he was like, okay, yeah, so she didn't ask me why it's called the milk crate. I'm sure that that's coming.
Brandon 28:12
I mean, she's pretty bright. I think she can probably deduce why you would refer to something as a milk crate. Well, that's fair. That's fair. Because at one point, it held milk
Collin 28:28
you never know.
Brandon 28:29
I mean, that's true. But you know, I believe in her. I think she can do that. I think
Collin 28:44
Oh, my goodness. Yeah. Well, it's been a been a training people this week.
Brandon 28:52
Oh, okay. So we have more people
Collin 28:55
now. We have have some more people have some more people all right. So that's always a step in the right direction. And it's been, it's, it's always interesting to not bring in past experiences with previous employees and apply them to the person in front of you and having to remind myself like, this person has never been here before. Like they don't they are their own person. They are their own unique individual. And I can't bring like my anxieties or my frustrations from the previous people and because that's just not fair to them. And I will say it's also also trying to bring in language and talking points so we found helpful for previous people have like that's how we, we
Brandon 29:54
learn to
Collin 29:57
phrase things about the intro and like All right, that was something that the person that previously had commented on about how they didn't understand this in the beginning. So I have to insert that here so that this person this new person knows and gets it. And so it's, and then and then also working at their pace of like, do I have my schedule of like, okay, you're going to be with me Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, Thursday, it's going to be, I'm just going to be standing in the shadows watching and then Friday, your solo flyway bird, right. And I'm reminding myself of just because that's my schedule doesn't mean that it's this person scheduled or that this person is going to get it at that pace, or, you know, or we might not have the mixture of visits necessary to get them to that point. So having to remember to breathe, as I have been told it is very important to do by individuals
Brandon 30:56
they do. Yes. So that's
Collin 30:59
Oh, gee, sorry, talking with my hands over here.
Brandon 31:03
That was assuming that I haven't been so
Collin 31:06
well, that made contact with your microphone yet.
Brandon 31:10
That you know.
Collin 31:16
So that's been, I mean, that's really just been the big, big, all consuming thing this week, has been doing these visits, and
Brandon 31:27
just walking through everything. And
Collin 31:31
every time we bring somebody on, I'm always reminded of like, oh, right, it's, this is a lot. It's so much I write this is, I need to remind myself of this is a good reminder to me of like, right, I just need to, again, breathe and go, it's going to be fine. It's gonna be fine. And then I don't do that. And then that that says whenever I don't remember, yeah, that's
Brandon 32:02
really yourself. The best plan really, really found out well, so.
Collin 32:13
Not a whole lot. Other than that, it's been, it's finished. Just the weekend. That's
Brandon 32:19
good, though. That's good. I do have some additional research for you. Oh, okay, thing from last week. Now, one of these topics, appears to be impossible to actually find reliable internet data on. But so the first one I would like to discuss is the the is How late are market shops open in 19th? century Europe? That's what I really want to know first, right? Like, that's
Collin 32:51
okay. Yeah. Market shops. Okay. Yeah. So
Brandon 32:53
we're talking about, this is very difficult to ascertain, right? Shopping trends, you either get if you talk, start talking in typing game, like European markets and things about this, you either get, like trade information from the time period, right? Like, what were the hot commodities and like, what were the big things traded by so that's not what I want. Right? Or you get a lot of information about market towns, right? Because they were, of course, many towns that were created solely for the purpose of being the market, right. And so, they would have all the goods and services in this centrally located town. And then people would live outside the town, on the farms in the rural surrounding areas. And then market town was like the central hub for all the goods and services, right. There were even laws where market towns could not be placed within X miles of each other in certain instances, right. But I finally found some information about shopping. Like what it was like to shop like the history of shopping. This is where I had to go for some of this information. While really Yeah, like shopping habits right? Now, the only thing what like the vague information i The closest I got in all of this was something about the most shoppers would return home at sunset, although many of the shops would stay open later. So okay, that does mean that perhaps, perhaps there was some darkness involves also candles, specific candles, yes. And a lot of them would open around 6am. So there is essential that the setting up of the market would take place by candle stroke lamp light. Right? Because like, that would make sense to me that if you're going to start it early, you know, that you would have to be there earlier to get things set up and going. And so, you know, that's kind of what I would think about that. So it it appears to not be a super common thing. So also, in all I did also think about, obviously, try to think about like other like time period references, right, and you know, you know, in a, in the Christmas Carol, when Scrooge is going home, there's still stuff happening about and this is dark, right? Lamplighter. Like, yeah, what however, however? Yes, right, we'd have to ascertain what what time did Scrooge leave time? He did go to bed very late. But that because he was sitting How long was he at home? Right, we can have these things. But but also this is around Christmas, this is Christmas time. And so the Christmas market is in effect. This sort of skews our results slightly. Okay. And in all other artwork, depictions of markets from the time period that I looked at. Nobody else painted them at night. So oh,
Collin 36:34
well, maybe he saw an opening. Right? He was I mean, I did
Brandon 36:37
find the there wasn't each there. Right. Now, again, I can't say nobody, because did I look at every single conceivable depiction of a market? Painted? Between? Oh, 17 119 100 No, definitely not. Because it turns out very, very popular painting topic, right. shared by our boy, Mr. Candles seems to be the only one painting them at night. Right. So so but it could plausible going plausible, right? Not 100% Confirmed. But I think there is some plausibility in this right people coming home late, perhaps the late crowd from like a theater, maybe the operator or something right stopping by on the way home or people setting up and people getting there early to find the best deals at the market. Right? Because you know, right, if we if we if we extrapolate based on now, if you have a garage sale, and you say, ah, we are opening at nine o'clock. Somebody will be at that garage sale. Yeah. Between usually an NP. Yeah, you know, it's fine. But like, they're getting there early, because they want to, like, scoop up all the best stuff. So if you are, if you are in the market for some apples, right, and you're already going to the market and you want to make sure that you get the good ones. You know, get there a little bit early. Right. What are they gonna say? What are they gonna say? someone's like, hey, I'll pay you this money for these apples. We were like, No, thank you. I don't want to today think no, no, that's not gonna work. Right? Because when progress show up, you're annoying. And it's not because all your stuff is what they buy stuff your life. Okay, have a good day, sir. See you later.
Collin 38:43
Bye. Yeah. Yeah, well, that was easy. Yeah, my, my, my quick research here, wintertime in Amsterdam. Sunrise, around 8:40am
Brandon 39:05
sunsets 430. So and so in the wintertime. Right? It does set the Sunday set very early. And we know that you know, people were still doing it if you're used to like buying stuff up into because in summertime, sunsets like, you know, nine o'clock so like there is a potential winter component here. Fall Winter. Ah, perhaps seasonal has a seasonal element where this could be even more plausible. Hey,
Collin 39:43
this is very I like it. Yeah. I mean, it doesn't seem like it was a huge aspect but it does sound like he was painting or was possibly painting, what he was experiencing around him around him or if he may have to has been very fascinated enough with the idea of trying to capture that, you know how some artists can get like, No, I gotta get this aspect just right. So I'm going to paint the candle. Yeah, now 1000 different types. Yeah.
Brandon 40:13
And then if you apply it to a market scene where there's more subjects and there's oil and the lighting is more diffuse and more dramatic, perhaps like then you have a whole new, like, element to study, right? And if you're doing that, then that's how it goes. But I do realize that I'm still leaning towards the plausible aspect was of the shopping culture. Okay. In the 19th century, they go 19th century history experts, please let us know if you have any additional information here. About the shopping habits of 19th century Europeans. That'd be great. European friends below, please let us know what's up. Right. So second research into your Minca baseball league. You're
Collin 41:09
a little bit cold. Yeah, right. Okay.
Brandon 41:11
So this one, a lot more. Cut and dry. Right? A lot more. Okay. Well, I eventually, I found more stuff. Right. There's more concrete evidence here about this. And how it worked. Right? Okay. But the original League, right, it was the league associated with, like the Major League Baseball people, right. But it was never real big. There was never just like, tons of teams in this thing. So it's always kind of small. And the interestingly, it didn't say that like, even though it is named, Missouri, Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, that those four states did not all have competing. They did not all have teams in the league at the same time. Like ever. During its actual Oh, so it's just like weird. It's a positive one of them. Yeah. Yeah, like one year it was like Kansas Nebraska in the one years like Iowa, Nebraska, right. Like it was. But not yet, not always. It was in all the teams were in the four states but not necessarily always at the same time. Yeah, they they go. What, like so pretty. Like, there's not a whole bunch of teams right on 239? Maybe not, not a whole lot. But he just did it. It wasn't making very much money. Right. Not a lot of draw power. Although, all interestingly, this will. This goes in with the you here. I think you would like to know that many fans travelled by train because the Missouri Pacific service all the league towns?
Collin 43:24
Oh, yeah. So this is what I'm talking about.
Brandon 43:30
So fans, we just traveled around to all the towns by on the Missouri Pacific Railway. Oh, yes. Yeah. That is more of that, please. Yeah. But one of the major downfalls not major, but one contributing factor that is noted to impact a league success. Oh, we're the Sunday laws of Nebraska and Kansas. Oh, to have your play. European friends. You'll love this. And many states, even today, yep. It is illegal to sell alcohol on a Sunday. I was also researching it. I apparently in some states, it's illegal to sell cars on Sunday to cars. Yeah, yeah. No, that I was just like, what there's more like, because it said Oh, such as and then. Yeah, some states don't sell cars there. Which is odd. But yeah. But um, so it's not uncommon for things to be closed on Sunday. Right? Just you know, for have a days off or religious reasons or anything like that. Right. That's normal. But uh, they in a lot of US states, there's no liquor sale on Sunday. And you know, where people drink a lot of beer? That was Baseball, baseball. Is
45:06
it what it? Huh, that's me. And so I
Brandon 45:10
think sometimes we like certain own when certain towns were playing on Sunday, like not as many people would show up, because they were either otherwise engaged or they could not buy things. And so they're like, and so that is one of the possible contributing factors to not be like Soul, obviously, but is a factor that could have impacted the success of the league, right. So like, some of the Nebraska teams, if they had a home game on a Sunday, they would have to play their home game in Kansas. Right? And that's just awkward and this whole thing and whatever. So, yes. But eventually, they just kind of like, petered out. And just like, not enough teams and teams would like, I think the teams were leaving this league to go to like, slightly bigger, more visible leagues, right. So you'd have like a team drop and like, go to a different like, conference or whatever, you know, if you think about it like that, they would like switch or go to another thing. And so they just kind of lost teams. And eventually, they're like, well, we don't have enough people, enough teams, and we don't really have enough money to keep it going. So we'll just quit. Like we'll just call it off and your teams went in, like, maybe they went to other leagues or whatever. But that was the little bit more of a story around the mink League. 1910 To 1913 There you go. Okay.
Collin 46:47
That's still going. I was gonna say strong, but thanks to Joplin, not so much anymore. But it's still going. Still going. Yes. Still rounds. You
Brandon 46:55
Joplin. Joplin helping No, buddy. Yeah, ever. Oh.
Collin 47:07
Well, yeah, no, I think we've got it on our schedule to go to a few more games, not the bombers game, but just go see more games there in general. Yeah. Oh, my gosh, hit again. Sorry, cheese. So I'm looking forward to that as the summer progresses on to go. See them play? And we'll take in take a little bit of the history for that. Haha. Yeah. Yeah. No, I
Brandon 47:32
think about traveling by train.
Collin 47:34
Right. Or by foot since I can I mean, yes, but you can imagine
Brandon 47:38
you got 1611. And with your strange fitting pants, senior, weird socks or whatever, like that's what you mean? Oh, perhaps? Perhaps? Yes. Yeah, I had something else I wouldn't share. Because I was okay. So time back into testing time, right. Testing, obviously, obviously, has a lot of components that you must study and go over. And one thing that we have talked about a lot in sixth grade is figurative language. Because there's a lot of it. Right. And, you know, the heart Oh, oh, yeah. So the hardest thing about learning different languages, right, is you run into the figurative language, right? And you get hit square in the face. Like, if you're learning English, somebody will inevitably say something to you. Like, it's raining cats and dogs outside, and you're gonna be like, What the heck are you talking about, bro? Right. So we have all these, like, very exciting idioms. You know, it's diamond doesn't like, oh, man, you're barking up the wrong tree to break a leg. And here's like, what I'm talking about. Right, of course, provides much birth in movies. You know, right. This is always a fun
Collin 49:12
misunderstanding and misunderstanding, right? When
Brandon 49:15
you say don't beat that dead horse and someone's like, What are you talking about? Right, so I found this random article today entitled through Mental Floss. Right? You boys ever been to philosophy? But it's called 20 delightful ATMs from around the world. I was reading it. I was like, What the heck? I just wanted to share some of these with you and talk about what they could possibly mean.
Collin 49:45
Yeah, no, I think it's best to because I see that they have these. Well, in a perfect order. What they do is they list all 20 without any context, and yeah, to scroll to get to them, and that is perfect because you need to assess
Brandon 49:59
for them. You need to just stare. I have not scroll down on this list at all. I want you to Okay. I only looked at the top and was like, oh, no, I have to talk about No, this is like a half cold read here.
Collin 50:16
Some of these we're not going to be repeating I'm looking at
Brandon 50:18
family. Right, Emily? We got a paraphrase looking paraphrase, we have to
Collin 50:27
know, these are fantastic. And it really starts off with a strong one. It does. Alright, to slide in on a shrimp sandwich. Thank you. Wait, wait,
Brandon 50:38
wait, what are you talking about? Yes. Yes. So?
50:43
I don't know.
Brandon 50:46
So apparently,
Collin 50:49
this is meant to describe somebody who hasn't worked hard for the things that they have. Because it's a fancy sandwich as opposed to like a meatball sandwich, which everybody eats shrimp sandwiches or not. And is
Brandon 51:06
that because you need more? Is there more prep time for the shrimp? Perhaps like the vein and like take the legs off? myself? Because I
Collin 51:15
think it's just that it's a higher class food.
51:19
Well, perhaps true. That's true.
Collin 51:21
I just think that's what because like, meatballs and get you a meatball say like, Swedish meatballs. Like, I think that that's the everyday food, or like this the fancy sandwich. So they're picking a fancy item. Like it basically, you know, it's like, Oh, you came in here on your roll in your Rolls Royce to do
Brandon 51:41
whatever, like
Collin 51:44
pointing out the kind of lifestyle that that person leads. That makes sense. Okay,
Brandon 51:49
I would also I am not going to attempt to pronounce these in their language, but I bet they sound awesome. Oh, I wouldn't. He doesn't give you the Swedish pronunciation here. But as I don't know how to say these letters. I Yep. I just
Collin 52:08
it sounds like it really ends on a great word. Because that wouldn't rock moto. I definitely wouldn't say it. But yeah, that looks amazing. No, I
Brandon 52:17
can't do you feel about thinking about the immortality of the crab?
52:24
I can envision many many
Collin 52:26
scenarios which with with which this would be expressed pure in the States. And they also wouldn't be also around the line of Have you ever really looked at your hands like
Brandon 52:38
right, apparently describes daydreaming? That's what I read here. I will attempt Spanish. All right, Spanish friends a pin sallow in my belly that the camera has. Yeah. You're daydreaming? I know.
Collin 52:57
I do have this goes on to say I'm sorry. Immortal. Of course.
Brandon 53:01
Yeah, but like, you know. But what if they were? Which Oh, yeah, but I like how they wrote it which simply adds whimsy to the phrase like
53:14
oh, the Polish have
Collin 53:15
one. This is a bonus one. The Polish have won in this in this in the same vein that says you are thinking about Blue allness
Brandon 53:25
is interesting. I apparently just daydreaming daydreaming
Collin 53:32
because you're thinking about crazy things. ridiculous things. whimsical thing?
Brandon 53:40
You know, yes. skip to the next one for you know, family friendly reasons. And your schedule. The next one is Italian. Oh, the the last vulgar equivalent in Italian when I read this here into the wolf's mouth. Uh huh. Go means apparently this means like Good luck. Good luck to you like break a leg or something. Which is odd. Yeah. Yeah. That's a weird way to say that. But
Collin 54:07
well, well, well, I'll see you so here's so let's say you you read that phrase you say the first thing you just said you said into the ABS but I haven't had a wolf's mouth. And I'm supposed to say May it die,
Brandon 54:17
which is you know, thing to say. Good luck.
Collin 54:25
Yeah. That's interesting.
Brandon 54:29
So that's how I say goodbye. In
Collin 54:31
an Iceland they have no one becomes an unbeaten Bishop.
Brandon 54:36
That is what
Collin 54:40
a no pain no gain.
Brandon 54:43
Ah,
Collin 54:44
this idiom is supposed to be a reference to the medieval era Icelandic Bishop, Guam Mulder rason, who is said to have faced a lot of hardships. So basically, as a leader, you don't get to where you are without having been beaten down.
Brandon 54:59
Are you saying you don't slide in on the shrimp sandwich?
Collin 55:02
Yes you might in the next trip sandwich I think I think that's what this is exactly this is the the antithesis antithetical
55:11
yeah
Brandon 55:16
go already try to put in the vocab
Collin 55:21
integrate yourself into this
Brandon 55:25
random idioms
Collin 55:33
something that has a Yeah, so if you are in in Turkey you can say one's shoes are thrown to the rooftop if you have fallen out of favor. Oh, if a shoemaker it's according to the Ottoman Empire. If a shoemaker was judged to have crafted an inferior product, they'd be thrown onto the roof of their shop to serve as a warning sign to other potential customers.
Brandon 56:01
Wow. Like your this is trash. It's on the roof. Yes.
Collin 56:04
And look look at how trash these are. You can see them there on the
Brandon 56:09
on display. Like it. Good one. Not too bad. I like that one. I like this French one better. This is way better. Off the French column.
Collin 56:25
I'm good. I'm fine. All
Brandon 56:27
right, here we go. Because you know you know the French love it whenever you try to speak French badly. That's a favorite thing. Is it well noted. Coliseum downs. Okay. Maybe it's don't sleep. Yeah, don't
Collin 56:42
don't zones on lasal day. This will take.
Brandon 56:45
Yeah, apparently don't push granny into the nettles. Oh, he's like Don't exaggerate. Don't push it. Don't which is kind of funny. But like,
Collin 57:00
like, that's too far. Let's not do that. Yeah. Like, push your luck, right?
Brandon 57:05
Apparently you say don't push granny to the nettles. Calm down on town. I gotta back off here.
Collin 57:18
This next one like Korea. I don't is such a local ism. Like it's such. Because
Brandon 57:25
yeah, because this this. Yeah. What
Collin 57:30
says you don't know the letter gi doc, even after putting down a sickle?
Brandon 57:36
I'm assuming this has to do with the writing the writing?
Collin 57:40
Yes, it's a non although this idiom may seem nonsensical translation to anyone familiar with Hangul? The Korean Aha, it makes perfect sense. The first letter of the alphabet is good luck. It's I can't I'm not saying that ready. So it's considered the most basic letter. Right. It's a right angle. And it also happens to be shaped where? Yeah, well, it's it's shaped like a sickle because it's just the right angle there. So if someone doesn't know, this, even when looking at the blade, they aren't the sharpest tool in the shed. And like
Brandon 58:12
it. Yeah, that that requires some deep knowledge. Oh, I can just like go live in that went in. I don't know. Can't just flipping that way into everyday conversation. Now.
Collin 58:25
But wow, how many layers to that again, if we're trying to lost somebody? That's a good way
Brandon 58:30
back. Korea is not messed around here. South Korea is. Yeah.
Collin 58:33
Oh, yeah. Because they're not not the sharpest tool in the shed. This letter resembles a blade that you find in a shed. And they're basically saying you wouldn't even know this letter. Even if you had to tell
Brandon 58:45
the difference between a farm implement and a letter. We can we illiterate? Right? So we know that. I'm assuming this is only set by South Koreans is the same funny. And that doesn't seem like a North Korean thing. Just zero humor. Yeah. And they might actually not know the difference, because they don't get to learn how to read and write only dear leader who's allowed? Yes.
Collin 59:10
But they do fake type on non non powered computers. Did you see that video of North Korea. They're walking into this new like, data center, whatever. And they they're doing their famous tours for the media. And they're all walking through this room. And it's got a bunch of people frantically like typing on this on these keyboards in front of computer screens. Yeah, the guy stepped around to look at the screen, and there was nothing on it. Yeah.
Brandon 59:44
Yeah, have you I ever been on North Korean internet sites? Yes.
Collin 59:50
I think I think we've done that live before. I've talked about
Brandon 59:53
this before. Yeah. But like it's the wildest thing. It's like imagine listening imagine or some of you don't have to cast your mind back to what a website looked like. In like 2000 That's it bad.
Collin 1:00:15
Yeah. And a poorly implemented version at that.
Brandon 1:00:18
Yeah, like bad Java, right like real like some of the random websites we pull up on the show randomly. Just because somebody made it like a million years ago and it's still around.
1:00:32
It's like that
Collin 1:00:39
this next one
Brandon 1:00:40
by Afrikaans, Afrikaans so dare Africa here scare with a puff of peas. I like this one. I do. Yes. It is. People
Collin 1:00:51
who scare easily or are afraid of their own shadow. Very nice because you could scare them with a pop up something that is not
Brandon 1:01:00
scary. Yeah, but very innocuous a p, right. Unless you're Princess of course. Other than that. I like that one.
Collin 1:01:09
They also have another one for scaredy cats. And it says somebody is there afraid of cold pumpkin?
Brandon 1:01:14
Well, you know, as one is
Collin 1:01:21
as one can can be.
Brandon 1:01:23
I guess that's because I guess pumpkins are also not inherently terrifying. No,
Collin 1:01:27
exactly. Yeah, but cold. Yeah, it's just unless they're in
Brandon 1:01:32
the hands of Washington Irvine character then perhaps then only only that. Only then do you think without looking here. What do you think of their owls in the bog? Me? What do you think? I haven't. I
Collin 1:01:51
haven't a clue. I haven't the dames are really pulling something off swan. Eric. There. Oh, yeah, that's okay. This, I couldn't even know I something. I don't know. Again. All of these just sounds like a phrase of something that's like, foolish or ridiculous or silly? Because, yeah. Translation is hard. But also the same. Yeah. convey a feeling or emotion or concept, which is hard. So yeah, I
Brandon 1:02:16
have no I mean, that's that's true. Like, that's the whole point of an ATM. Right? It's like a phrase that doesn't mean what it says. Right? That's kind of the definition of video. Right? Like to think that means that what you think you'd be right.
Collin 1:02:35
But, yeah, apparently, it's described something as suspicious or fishy. Make sense? Well, except Except they think that originally, that they think that this current the modern phrase is a corruption of the original phrase, which was was supposed to have said, there are rules in the bog mean, something's up. Something's. Yeah, but the word for Wolf and owl are
Brandon 1:03:04
similar, Haley. Yeah. Yeah. To be fair, although
Collin 1:03:08
there's more reason to be cautious of wolves and owls. The canines are actually recently extinct. So. Yes, yeah. Interesting.
Brandon 1:03:17
So that makes sense, right? Something's fishy. Something's fishy. Something's fishy.
Collin 1:03:22
There's owls in the bog. Yes, I guess. I mean, yes. If you said that those owls are out in the bog. I would also I think I would be like, okay, yeah, sure.
Brandon 1:03:32
Sounds like good. owl habitat. Really? Like I don't know. Yeah. I mean, it's fine. It's not too bad though. Apparently. If you want to convey that's the end of story. In Germany. Its lid shut monkey dead. AdAway. Bury Zoo. Oh, go story's done.
Collin 1:04:08
The monkey The monkey is dead. We can't fish. What else do you want? Man is dead. Right?
Brandon 1:04:15
Yeah. What is that? Like? Let's hope this doesn't have like a really weird like, terrible organ grinder backstory. That's like,
Collin 1:04:25
let's hope that we're gonna move on to number 12. Yeah, anyway. Oh, the check. Oh, man. Yes. Throw your rifle in the right.
Brandon 1:04:35
Does that mean to give up? Right? Yes. Yes. Would
Collin 1:04:39
never throw in the towel.
Brandon 1:04:41
Ah, throw in the towel. Okay.
Collin 1:04:45
Yeah, I mean, as as laid out on some of our own deep dives into a world history I think we've described this part of the world is kind of being constantly in Battle and fighting for themselves and their region. So it would make sense of like today you're not going to throw your rifle in the right not gonna give up.
Brandon 1:05:08
It's because you got to use that material other things.
Collin 1:05:12
Okay, now Soviets have taken this and they throw a rifle into the corn. Interesting
Brandon 1:05:19
to see chord in Slovenia. Is this true? Like what has happened is that is there a lot of chord in Slovenia? I don't I don't know this. Oh, we have skipped highlighted here
Collin 1:05:36
what is this?
1:05:37
I don't know.
Collin 1:05:40
I don't, but the courtship parties are gonna come and save us with. Take the little horse out of the rain.
Brandon 1:05:48
Does that mean? Similar to say don't hold your breath. What? What does that?
Collin 1:05:56
Like you better give up on it. Right? Send it convey. Give, just give. Don't like yeah, because they don't hold your breath is trying to say.
Brandon 1:06:05
Oh, yeah, like, Don't Don't get your hopes up. Right? Yeah,
Collin 1:06:08
go ahead and take the little horse out of the rain. Go ahead and get them out. Don't Don't leave them out there don't because I guess you want to leave the horse in the rain, but they're saying to get him out because he's little.
Brandon 1:06:20
Okay, okay, if
Collin 1:06:22
a guest was invited to stay at their hosts house for a while, they would be told to stable their horse rather than leaving it in the elements.
Brandon 1:06:30
Ah, okay. It's like, heading that way. Maybe, I don't know. That don't get ya.
1:06:38
Oh says if a kid asks to see a scary movie, The Guardian might reply. Take your little horse out of the rain. So don't get your hopes up to see that it gets worse and unstable. Back in your back. The horse is the dream or the destroyer. And they're telling you to get it out.
Brandon 1:06:57
This is where Susan's mom would just say backup the truck hold. Like same old same thing says yes. Yeah. I like the next one. I just Hungarian one, right?
Collin 1:07:10
I'm gonna like a book. They really did a really good
Brandon 1:07:15
job. This one. This one's good stuff. This is defense is not native sausage. Which basically means it's not as good as you think it is. Right? It's a fence made of sausage is presumed to be excellent. And something that you want. Saying defense is not made of sausage is obviously well, it's not that great, right?
Collin 1:07:40
Not as good as you think. Of all the amazing things in the world like you're nowhere near that cool. To dreams. Things are things dreams are made of.
Brandon 1:07:55
Sausage fences
Collin 1:07:57
fall into the evolve the things to aspire to. At least I was hoping we'd go for a shrimp sandwich. But you know again, you
Brandon 1:08:10
can't you can't build a sausage Fence by slide in here on a shrimp sandwich. That's
Collin 1:08:15
okay. challenge how many of these can we meet together to
Brandon 1:08:21
make that a sticker? That'd be oh brother sticker.
Collin 1:08:30
That's our motto. That's to put that on the flag.
Brandon 1:08:37
At the tagline
Collin 1:08:39
I'm doing right now.
Brandon 1:08:45
That needs to be sticker real bad. I figured this out. Gotta have this to happen. Even if I'm the only one that buys it.
Collin 1:08:54
Oh, yeah, to get the artwork for let's get fancy sausage by sliding in on a shrimp sandwich. Okay.
Brandon 1:09:07
That means that means you can't can't make something great without putting in the work. That's what exactly
Collin 1:09:12
see. Bam done. hybridized
Brandon 1:09:17
where you were healing the world is but this is great or healed. Really? Healing the riffs. The dream of the United Nations. That's really what's happening right now. We're
Collin 1:09:27
Little did they know?
Brandon 1:09:28
They know? Right?
Collin 1:09:36
Oh, you know, they were they were probably asking themselves. Should I sniff my nails?
Brandon 1:09:42
Obviously, obviously, that's what you're asking. Yes. Building sausage.
Collin 1:09:46
Yes. I said should I sniff my nails? The Greek the Greeks. The Greeks are obviously asking themselves for a very long time. Which makes sense because they're falafel. suffers and apparently this is is asked a question if a Greek person is asked a question they couldn't possibly know the answer to the reply with the with the expression should I sniff my nails? Ah, how would I know? How would I know? Would I know? When and why
Brandon 1:10:21
do I just read the second part of my guess it's
Collin 1:10:27
because they were also used to using Oracle's and things like that they would
Brandon 1:10:35
do a Delphi, hallucinogenic or oil
Collin 1:10:40
so basically, they're saying should I dip my fingers in hallucinogenic oil and get an answer for you? How else am I supposed to do this?
Brandon 1:10:48
Pull it out of nowhere right off the Oracle is mobile nonsense that you like yes, I will go to war with Athens like wait, no, that's not Oh, Milan. Back it up. Calm down the United What are you doing? speaking Greek mortal enemies ever saying from Persia, right? So we're not probably not King Darius or Xerxes here I'm imagining this is a little hotter but right apparently in you know is Persian proverb with Iran, France Persia, right. You One does not simply say it doesn't have anything to do with me. Instead, you would say I have neither the top onion nor the bottom. Bam. You know that doesn't do with me. Not the top or the bottom. Whatever. No. Yeah, here. No, I'm
Collin 1:12:00
not I'm useless here.
Brandon 1:12:02
Basically. Oh my gosh. Yeah. I love it. My house is Nexus. Japanese. Okay. Don't let your
1:12:22
don't let your daughter in law. Eat for eggplants?
Brandon 1:12:27
Yeah, I don't have enough gardening knowledge to know if that's good or bad. Oh, don't Oh, that's weird. Oh. So that means don't let don't don't be taken advantage of don't get
Collin 1:12:47
taken advantage of
Brandon 1:12:48
right. But apparently it's because in historical Japan Times daughter in laws suck in the family hierarchy. Yeah, what a waste really good fall produce on a lowly daughter in law daughter in law. So don't touch it. That's man there's again. There's a lot of layers. Yeah, and yeah.
Collin 1:13:17
Sticking with the chicken with the gardening, gardening theme here the Hindi have a you are a radish. From which field?
Brandon 1:13:26
Oh, beans. Like who do you think you
Collin 1:13:30
are? What makes you special?
Brandon 1:13:33
Don't remember that in the Bollywood challenge?
Collin 1:13:35
No, I didn't see that at all.
Brandon 1:13:37
didn't either. Oh, Colin still hasn't finished his movie,
Collin 1:13:41
by the way. I still have cameras on every now and then pop up and like continue watching and I'm like, Yeah,
Brandon 1:13:48
next now at this point. It's a meme.
Collin 1:13:52
I can't do it now. Right? Yes, you have to start over. And that I think I can get caught back up really?
Brandon 1:14:01
Good value. From which field you're at. From which field? Hi, love it. Yeah. Okay. And ramming us out here. Oh, our friends from the Ukraine. Have a lovely saying. Which is interesting. Because I didn't know that they had these there. But you you want to if you're gonna be was this mean? Oh, if you're gonna help somebody, right? You're gonna Oh, no, no more of a threatening way. Ah, Ron, you're going to show them what's what? You're going to show somebody what's what you're gonna teach them a lesson. I misread that. I said lesson I was like, oh, helpful. No, no, now they're gonna show you what's up. Gonna tell you what, four. You're going to show someone were the crayfish or wintering
Collin 1:14:50
to show someone with a refrigerator. It does sound
Brandon 1:14:53
a bit threatening, right but it doesn't really sound like a great place. I don't think I would want to hunt for crayfish in the wind. to where it's freezing, cold and muddy. Yeah. So make sense, right? That does sound. Yeah, here, it does sound a bit like a punishment, right? It's the crayfish in the winter. Right? Show you with crayfish when there was a bus that went on sixth graders just stare at him. Like, I'll show you where the crayfish are in the winter. And they'll be like, what?
Collin 1:15:22
That's great. What's the other thing I'm thinking about? Just like, if I can get these ingrained in my head, if I can start using these, like, but yeah, not all of them, but just like, it's like a four, or maybe two, if I just shoot for two that I can just have to use in situations. And so they're really filling them out. Just and and the conversation just ended, because it's like, what are they going to say back? And it's true. That's, that's really what we need. Oh, these are fantastic.
Brandon 1:16:02
