Collin 00:04
Welcome to Oh, brother, a podcast of three brothers trying to figure it all out with your hosts, Brandon, Colin and Aaron. On this week's show, pneumatic duck cannon.
Brandon 00:19
Oh boy. Oh boy. Oh, how's
Collin 00:22
it going? Well
Brandon 00:27
I'm alive. That's good. Okay, yeah. Yeah, barely. today. We're back at work. That's fun. All right.
Collin 00:37
Yeah, sorry. Any unofficial sponsors Helping you get through that hardship.
Brandon 00:47
First day back to work. First day back not at work work now. No kids. Oh, okay. I do have that stuff written. I have some. Okay. In my bag for my unofficial sponsorship. Okay. You know, thank you. Probably don't need it tomorrow. Because tomorrow's parent like open house. I can only get parent night could but that's something different was open house. Oh, what's that? What's?
Collin 01:13
What's the difference? I don't. It's the first one. Oh, okay.
Brandon 01:23
On a parent nights are like, oh, there's like activities, and you can do a thing about but this is like, find your locker. Here's your classroom. What's going on? Like? That makes sense. Have you signed your device contract? Like all that. But everything's sort of a disaster. Like the bathrooms aren't done still. Oh, I there's like still a lot of like air into construction, just like literally everywhere in the hallway. Oh, no. My air conditioner is toast. Like it's gone.
Collin 02:03
Like it's not working at all.
Brandon 02:09
Oh, so they think it might have been hit by lightning couple weeks ago. That's pretty solid. They didn't bother to like,
Collin 02:15
straight look at stuff, you know? Yeah. There's like,
Brandon 02:20
not a coffee machine that works anywhere, apparently. So that's cool. Oh, I need to know who needs to make copies for the first week of school? Well, when you don't get your devices until week,
Collin 02:32
two or three.
Brandon 02:36
I mean, who needs that? I'd say nobody needed part about it. Ridiculous. is what it is, is just the most ridiculous thing on the face of the planet. It's like it's probably
Collin 02:55
fine. Like, again,
Brandon 03:00
I've talked about this before. It's like it's the outside things that let me down the hardest because I have things I could be doing. But there's roadblocks in the way and I literally can't do them. Because Is there a copy machine in my wing? That works? No. Oh, no, there's
Collin 03:16
no. Oh, that's frustrating.
Brandon 03:19
So like, Can I do these things?
Collin 03:23
Nope. Also no.
Brandon 03:24
Oh, no. So that's exciting. Yeah, no, that's right. It's whatever. I don't care.
Collin 03:37
I mean, accept it as much as you do care.
Brandon 03:39
I mean, I do. But it's like, so annoying that like, yeah. So yeah, I will see allegedly, allegedly. Uh huh. The tech person even used the word allegedly in her email. So that is instilling a lot of confidence that there is going to be a new copy machine in my world tomorrow.
Collin 04:04
And they use the word allegedly. Yeah, she
Brandon 04:07
used the word allegedly. So that's why I think it's one of those ones like they've been waiting on it. And she called again, and they told her it was coming. So she's just like, whatever. They told me and it's coming. I believe them because they said that
Collin 04:21
before. Like, oh no. Like yeah, it's
Brandon 04:31
it was one of those was one of those like, like, they just like our like contract on the old machines like ran out. Right? So they were good. They were upgrading all the other ones, you know, so like, and like the service goes with the contract least thing something I don't know, like, so they wouldn't the other machines were too old. They weren't going to service them anymore. And we had to like upgrade our machine All right. And so they didn't do the one in our building yet, because we're the stepchildren and like we didn't nobody cares about our building. Right? So like, they did all the other ones. And then like that, they're like, Okay, this machine, we can keep it up here, but it can't get serviced. And then like, basically right after they said that, it just died. Like a horrible. Oh, no. That's like, great. Thanks. That was the end of last year.
Collin 05:33
You know, pretty awesome.
Brandon 05:36
Yeah, it's fun. Right? That's where we are. So, yeah, to do that today, sitting through exciting meetings, I watched all my
05:46
training videos. Those are fun, love those are, you know, like, all 50 million of them about like, workplace safety and like, sexual harassment,
Brandon 06:00
which is important stuff. Don't get me wrong. Right. Not watching videos. It's very, you know, it's very corporate. It's
Collin 06:12
very, like, silly. Like, it's not like
Brandon 06:17
I don't know, I sometimes and it's weird, but whatever.
06:22
All that stuff. So I got all those done today, while I was doing other things, getting ready for stuff, making things and I could never did. However, today, meet a man who is like
Brandon 06:42
they were trying to get me to talk to this guy for like, but we just kept missing each other. He is working with the construction dudes. Right? But he's like, also an archaeologist. Right. And he's also like, I guess a pretty eminent, like Native American, or, like archaeologist of Native American sites in Missouri.
Collin 07:07
Like he has a book is like, Hey,
Brandon 07:11
have you read about like the one of the oldest, like, caches of arrowheads, and like, building sites or whatever in Missouri, like he was on that he found that, right, like, wow, he just dropped that bomb on me. I don't remember. I can't remember the name now. But he said the name and I was like, I've read about that. I know that, right. So we're gonna, yeah, we sat and talked for a really long time today about stuff. He may may try to get him to come into the classroom and talk about stuff. But
Collin 07:43
he was talking to me about, you know, arrow heads and stuff. And like,
Brandon 07:52
all that titles. And like typology. I do love a good typology, as we know. Yeah. You know, love that stuff. So talking about like, the typology of arrowheads, and like, the names and the forms and the dates and all this stuff. And like, it was very interesting. He actually said, I didn't realize this, but you know, I 71 down through McDowell County, like to Arkansas, you know, how that took him? Like 7 million years to get that done? Yeah. Right. Apparently, part of the reason that took so long is because while they were digging and blasting that out, they found some native migratory sites from like, really, a certain time period. Right. And that's like, he's talking to me about the this one type of arrowhead. Right. And it's the last stone arrowhead before metal was introduced by European settlers.
08:53
Right. Oh, and it's only a set it was only around for like 150 some years. Now, now that is that a there? They only use this particular kind of stone or is it potato?
Brandon 09:05
They only they only use this particular technique and design of the stone era? I see. Okay, right. So like, the, the way that it, like the evolution of stone points is like he told me, and I'm going to take his word for it, because he has published and he seems to be an expert in these things. He told me that the most important part is the part where the arrowhead attaches to the half of the thing. Right? Okay. He said, That is the thing that changes the most, he's like the front point, the point part, whatever, like, it's all the same, right? But that back part is the like, where the technology was developing the most. Right interesting
09:47
sort of like the shape of the head and in the part where it connected to the shaft of their or the spear, you know, if it's a spirit Well, that's, and that makes a lot of sense, because once it's pointy, right, you can kind of like okay, well that's fine, but Then there's the
Brandon 10:01
Yeah, right. Like, if that makes dinner I never thought about it before, you know, saying, but it does make a lot of sense because like, there's only so many iterations on
Collin 10:11
pointedness. Right, like, that's not really
Brandon 10:15
gonna change a lot and affect a lot of other stuff. But he said that this one was like the last one before the they started broadly using metal arrowheads, like right before and he said, It's all he says only like two to three generations of people. That's it. And so if you find those sites, it's a very, very specific date. And he said, That's really cool. Because a lot of the other ones, the date ranges are like 2500 years. So if you find one, it's kind of like, oh, it's somewhere here. But But this specific one is like
Collin 10:57
150 years, Max.
Brandon 10:59
And those are the ones that they found in McDonough County. Wow. Okay. And he said it was you could basically, like I said, they became down and they did some dig pits and other areas, and you could kind of like track the migration, you can see a path of motion and following stuff, whatever. So I was like, that's really cool. Yeah. I didn't know that. They should. Tell me more about that. Now, just like under construction, still,
Collin 11:29
like, sorry.
Brandon 11:33
Yeah, give me an update on the cool part. About like, why it isn't. Yeah, he was. He's really interesting guy. So maybe you might come to my class? I don't know. We'll see. I'll make something happen. That sounds like a great connection.
Collin 11:52
Yeah. Good. Right. So
Brandon 11:56
I told him, I was like, Yeah, we dig too. But like we're digging for, like rocks and stuff. Yeah. And then the crossover event here is he was talking about how like a lot of like, the native jewelry from this area, like one of the things that they would do is they would take, they would find Crinoid fossils, and then make those into beads for the necklace. I was like, well, they have a lot of bead opportunities. Because when I dig out here in this field next to the school, we find pride always just hand over fist. So like we get quite a lot of our event, or our or our disciplines here. So oh, it was first we need, like pretty cool guy. So
Collin 12:40
here's the good thing about today did that. That's the highlight
Brandon 12:45
of my day. Really? That was a breakfast. So that's a
Collin 12:50
wow, there's a lot going on in there. Really was a long day. Yeah. Are you exhausted? Because I feel lost? Oh, good. Good.
13:05
No need. So
Collin 13:07
any. They didn't give you any deadlines at all or anything for when you're going to have? I mean, other than allegedly alleged copy machines? No updates on anything else? No. Is it?
Brandon 13:23
Cool something? Oh, cool. Sounds pretty cool. Yeah. Because I asked him because they just find that my air conditioner was dead dead today. So I was like, Cool. So January, February, probably, yes. By the time they get one, get it out there. And I'm on the second floor. So they have to get like a crane. And like, it'll still be there. So it's like yes, hi, this is not going to happen. anytime soon. I'm going to boil to death and then potentially freeze to death. Because the unit is the air and heater at same time. So it's all like one unit. These are like the dad units, right? Like the big giant ones that are all the roof. So like. Yeah, I have to bring my parka later, right. Start out with my flip flops and then move to parka because
Collin 14:18
well, at least you can really showcase the full breadth of your wardrobe.
Brandon 14:23
That's true. Right?
Collin 14:24
Yeah. The full scope. Would be great. Sure. All right. Yeah. All right. So pretty much is spent either doing really? No,
Brandon 14:41
I did. I did want to. I gathered some of my thoughts. Right. So I have have a small addendum to last week. Right? We have ruminations on dragnet. Okay, are you ready?
Collin 14:54
Oh, oh, sorry. I'm also I have some follow up about dragnet as well. Oh,
Brandon 14:59
her Vegas Vegas. Oh, that's a new dragnet centric podcast. But I was, I was thinking about this, right? And I've been, as we know, I've been like, totally watching every law and order episode ever, ever. But now that we're up to like 2002, right? Totally not as exciting. Right? It's like a very modern show, right. But the thing I liked about the early lawn order is it is a very, very 90s experience watching it, right, everything from like the fashion did, the way that they are finding things like the detective like equipment, right, like the lab situation is like, some paper in a microscope. Right? So it's like very of
Collin 15:49
a time. Right.
Brandon 15:52
And this is what dragnet also gives you, dragnet original 1950s version, right? Season Three, great. It is so of a time, right? And not just in the way that like, is the most obvious and like, how do you solve a crime in the 1950s? Like, you just talk to people. That's basically it. Right? This is that they do have a like a lab guy who like compares things and they still have like the gunshot residue or the like, Oh, look at this fingerprint. Or look at this bullet, right. They do like the Great Mouse Detective bullet in the microscope. thing, right? That's how it works. But also, it is the type of crime they are solving. That is very of a time in strange, right? So like I was watching episode the other day. And here's the here is the premise a
Collin 16:53
couple
Brandon 16:56
goes a check into a hotel using a fake name. Clearly. They phone up a doctor saying there's an emergency. The Doctor makes the house call to the hotel. They whack him on the head and steal his drugs out of his doctor bag and
Collin 17:17
run away. Ah, right. This is
Brandon 17:22
this is not a crime. It's happening now write this.
17:26
And it makes you wonder. Was this happening a lot? Like why was there a rash of, of housecall doctors getting having their medication stolen? Apparently, the story you are about to hear is true after all.
Brandon 17:42
Right. And there was another one, right? Another this one is very nefarious, right? They were looking, it was like a ring of people, right? You know, they use weird words for this. But like, there was a ring of people. And what they were doing is they were looking in the obituary paper, finding people who recently died taking like a junk pen and pencil set and engraving the name on it, and then going to the person's house and saying they ordered this for you. I'm here to collect payment on this thing.
Collin 18:19
Right? Like, you know,
Brandon 18:21
this and then expecting like, oh, they ordered this as a gift for you, spouse or sister. Someone and you know, they died before I you know it can be delivered in payment can be made. So you need to pay me for this thing. But it's like a gym. It's like trash and like, they didn't really order it. Right. So it's like a very nefarious endeavor. But again, this is not a crime that's happening very much either. 2023 right. It's it's not the thing that I'm aware of. It's currently haven't exhausted, like, some of the other crimes like you know, murder, that's like, you know, unfortunately, run of the mill stuff, right? Like, but there are some other like very specific things that are like so 1950 that it's it's kind of what makes it interesting to watch, right? Like some of those stuff. I think it's it's like such a period thing. It's like such a 1950s thing. That's where a lot of the enjoyment for me is coming from because it's not from the
Collin 19:26
riveting dialogue. Right. It's good. It's funny, but like
Brandon 19:33
you had a very American like, quippy detective. It's very important part of American Crime trauma.
Collin 19:39
Yeah. You know, but like,
Brandon 19:45
there's these very specific time period things that just like jump out at you. It's like, Ah, this is way different than what you're used to now. So that's, I think that's where my joy is coming from. I had some time to ruminate on this because like, last week, I was like, I In liking this show, I don't know why. It doesn't make sense to me why I've enjoyed this so much. But I think that is part of the reason, right? It's I've just enjoying this like time period. Yeah, of the show, right? And it's like, showcasing all these aspects of the time period, right? And you see all this other stuff, right? It's kind of like, a little snapshot into a depiction of the 1950s. Right? And it's like, the little things like the type of crime and like, just the way they talk and like, even the food, they eat really weird. Because like, he's like, oh, yeah, I make this all the time. And that's like, not a thing that people just make for dinner anymore. Right? It's like, he's like, oh, yeah, I just love making Spanish omelets. You like? What? What does that? Have you ever heard of that? People doing that just like for fun randomly, like, I don't know. So like, you know, these little side details are, are like, really humorous to me. And not humorous, but just like interesting and engaging. And I think that is why I have been enjoying dragnet. So much. So I wanted to add that addendum on. Okay, last week's me talking about Dragnet, but not having a very, like, clear, definitive reason why I liked it. And I think that is, that is why so your bago follow up. Okay. Well, what is your tie it out? And I'm curious. Well,
Collin 21:32
I think after after our conversation last week, Megan said what you talked about, I said, touch a little bit about brands watching dragnet. And she got a really big smile and start to nod her head like, yeah, yeah. And I was like, she really? And I was like, you know, like, the 50s 60s versions. And she was like, Yeah, Jack Webb is awesome.
Brandon 21:55
Yeah, is Megan That's right.
Collin 21:59
And I was like, what, what? And she was I used to watch it all the time growing up. I was like, no, no, like, the really old ones. And she was like, Yeah, I know, the real deal. That's fantastic. Yes, yes.
Brandon 22:18
So that was Heller. They're on Plex. Just in case you're curious. So there's some of the episodes on there. So okay, tell her she can once again watch some drag. We can talk. It'll be great. I'll,
Collin 22:33
I'll send her over that way. Yeah. Hey. Yeah, she was just like, yeah, yeah, right. It's awesome. Right. And I was like, What do you Why are you nodding so vigorously? Okay. Sure. Yes, she was. She enjoyed that very much.
Brandon 22:53
That's great. I like it.
Collin 22:57
So let me go to someone else in your corner. backs me back. Oh, but yeah, for us. We have, man a lot of stuff going on and not going on. We were fair bound over this past on Monday. Oh, yeah. Which was great. Because it was 78 degrees and a cool northerly breeze. Oh, man.
Brandon 23:29
There we go.
Collin 23:30
Which is the day to go to the fair
23:33
as Oh yeah.
Collin 23:37
Nothing nothing new and crazy this year. It was actually it felt like a really fast like three and a half hours, maybe close to four. But if it went by pretty fast, when we were there, we did our usual we stop and we like to go in through the here's here's a pro tip, the southern most entrance gets you it's not a lot of people are there you get to ride the tram into the fare, which is the best part is the train ride to into the fare from the parking lot as everyone will agree to that. No speaking
Brandon 24:09
because I would have
Collin 24:12
and then it takes you takes you up to the corner. Good off and then you go and you hit the horticulture building, which is where they're like, here's the best rows of all of Missouri and here's the best hyacinth and here's the best arrangement of lilies and like all those are in there, which is cool. Okay, then right next to that is the art building. And this is where they showcase like here's the best watercolor judged of all of Missouri like and here's the best, whatever oil painting, and this is also cool because they also have an artist in residence, which is a local artist as in from our town, and they set up shop and they like can sell their wares and do their art Which is neat, which is really cool. And that's always neat to see just come in and it's acts as a as another art gallery and we enjoy going to those so we can can go and explore there and then that's right next to the kids farm area. And that's where they have like, here is and duck and here is and pig and and horse and here are the best part. The best part about this entire thing is when you first walk in there is a little popcorn popper machine. Okay, okay, no, yeah, okay, but the popcorn thing is not on the inside. Instead, they have to have converted it into a place to hatch chicken eggs. And the top sign says a popcorn chicken. Nice nice
Brandon 25:59
sensor all that an incubator in case you're curious.
Collin 26:03
And it's an incubator for chicken eggs and so you to watch their eggs. And then you know, throughout the day the chickens hatch, and then they take them out of there and they put them in where the other chickens little chicks are. But yeah, it's It's popcorn chicken across the top. And it's hilarious. That's kind of funny. Yeah. Do you think go down this main drag?
Brandon 26:21
Don't put them in the wading pool with the ducks.
Collin 26:23
No, this is not.
Brandon 26:24
No, don't put them they're not the only reason why. No. It's not.
Collin 26:30
Because it can't have webbed feet more or the
Brandon 26:34
ducks not the same knots.
Collin 26:38
Anyway, that life hack brought to you by childhood experience. Then,
Brandon 26:46
it wants to be listeners just just so you know. I didn't do that. Yeah,
Collin 26:49
exactly. Here's the one thing Yeah, exactly. It wasn't you. You get to go down to the motor building where they have the big
Brandon 26:57
is it just a bunch of dudes standing around and hardhats not okay,
27:00
so they're they do have those people inside on the outside they have a big like, Mo dot man built out of barrels and cones. Yeah. So you get to go take your picture by mode out man or whatever I don't know. Like, it's just big mode. person out there. You guys go. You pick up all your coloring books, you get your updated roadmaps, we put those in your bag, and then you go through, you get to go now you'd write down next to the MDC buildings. So you get to see all of the fish, which is always so much fun.
Collin 27:30
And we got to watch their new dog do different scent work of what all they're trained in. This building is then right next to the big fields where they have all of the farm implements for sale.
27:49
Which is
Collin 27:52
great. So now you can go and you can go sit in the $560,000 Combine. Ah, and you can go sit in the big, you know, for whatever other implement that you want. This is this is a highlight of of our time there. And then we get to go from here we take a brief respite. This is where you usually refuel with lemonade, or whatever have you now you buy your tickets that are lemonade. Yes, yes. To go write the rights. You go now you're at the main fairway, whatever it's called.
28:32
And
Collin 28:33
now you get your tickets and now you go ride rights. Okay, then you ride the rides. And this year were a bit more timid on the ride riding. I'm not sure what happened. But I think we're old
Brandon 28:43
enough to realize the fair rides are kind of janky Okay, right. And go rust dad. We should Yeah. Was that was that much.
Collin 28:53
Is this bolt supposed to move? Right? How much play? How much play is supposed to be in the seats? Like is this is this? Yes. I think we're approaching that. Also, it could have been that we overloaded on very sugary lemonade and funnel cakes right before we went to do this so that we were kind of having a bit of a I feel like
Brandon 29:09
maybe that is all crashing right big part of it. Right?
Collin 29:13
Yeah, it's probably a big part of this. Do anything?
29:15
No, no, I
Collin 29:17
just kind of wanted I wanted here it's just stare. Yeah, right. Now, I will say our entire time at the fair was consumed with trying to find the one event that we really wanted to go to what we never found Alas, and this is this is the this is the duck throwing contest. Ah,
29:39
excuse you. Okay.
Collin 29:41
You know, as much as I do rowing you know, you know as much as I do about the point of this about the procedure of throwing a duck
Brandon 29:50
means probably to see who can throw a duck the furthest Yes, right. But ducks can already fly so why did not just
Collin 29:56
fly here's here's why they are they what, how are the ducks? Are we like what? What matters? Are the rubber ducks? Exactly. All that could be rubber ducks.
30:04
We What if What if while I'm, here's what it should be. I don't know if this is what it is. But here's what it should be. Okay. It should be like people that make those like Punkin Chunkin things,
Brandon 30:22
but it's for big rubber ducks. Oh,
Collin 30:26
that would be like the size like basketballs and
Brandon 30:28
stuff. Yeah, they have to build like a rubber duck watching Trevi Shea. Yes. Yeah, that's what it should be. That's what it should be. I don't know what it is. But that's what it ought to be. Because that sounds fantastic. I would definitely watch the
Collin 30:43
same. We never found out unfortunately, no clue. We will never know if you search duck throwing all you do is get pictures of ducks in the Chicago River, which nobody cares about. So I have a pair of people throwing ducks into the window. They they flooded the Chicago River with rubber ducks for something something something I don't know, Chicago, Illinois, right. Okay, so we also we had wanted to go see the antique. So, go see the antique tractor pole. This is far superior to the modern tractor polls with everything souped up really loud. This is literally here is a Ford farm all from 1953 Completely unmodified, except for about 20 pounds on the front and they're going to kind of pull. But that's that's all this is. It's amazing. This is by far. I can't tell you how spectacular this is. It's also hilarious because like some of those tractors
Brandon 31:45
like the big like, hopped up ones like they can't pull the sled and some of those like really old like, just they look like they're kind of falling apart. They don't go fast. But they literally never stopped pulling anything. Yes, they just like they get to the end. And it feels like they could just drive home. They're just like,
Collin 32:04
yeah, we're done like, and they just give
Brandon 32:08
us like I can pull the universe. Okay, get out of our way. Yeah.
Collin 32:13
How many? How? Like, how many horsepower? a sufficient number of them all?
Brandon 32:18
How many? How many torque work? Yes. All? Yes. Yes. For and of a black hole devouring of sun. That is what we're? Yes. And it's cool.
Collin 32:28
Because these are like, these are where you see like the grandpa putting their like, five year old grandchild on and they're just putting along and you're like, Okay, this is amazing. And it's not really loud. It's not really crazy. Nothing like they just kind of pull and kind of stop and then keep going. It's just, we I was very excited for these. And they were postponed because we got torrential rains the previous day and the day of the morning of so we were unable to do this because the field conditions were not appropriate
Brandon 33:01
for this. Those little trackers. Okay, they still pulled.
Collin 33:04
No, no, I don't think this is what they're meant for like we talking about? There's 17 inches of mud out there. This now. Now we can truly distinguish who Yeah,
Brandon 33:13
who among our it's a challenge. It was fine before but now
Collin 33:16
just the real
33:17
shutdown begins.
Collin 33:19
So we didn't get to see that. But yeah, so we were all concerned about the duck throwing and very confused at every turn. We rode the Ferris Wheel. We wrote a couple kinds of spinny rides. And we also rode the oh gosh, the name is completely Ah, wow. Carry you know, carousel. Yes. Thank you. Thank you. You
33:42
saw the picture of the carousel? Yes. Ah, so yeah, we read the carousel, it was very tame, then afterwards, you walk up the main fairway, you either get a refill of or you stop in the Family Center because it's one of the only air conditioned buildings in this side of this place. So you run in there to use the restroom, you wave to everybody that you know in there because also locals want to volunteer in this building.
Collin 34:10
And then you run out and go get your face painted. And then you take the tram all the way back to the front gate. And then you take the other tram back to your car, and then you leave. And this is a day at the fair. Ah we don't we're not really like other than the antique tractor pole that really events people like we don't don't need to go see people singing or they don't want
Brandon 34:31
to go see all this all the super hot stars of 1987 that are played at the State Fair circuit, right? Like,
Collin 34:38
I mean, I mean they do have Nelly this year. Oh, okay. Wow. And Ellie out of the way. How do you fall in? Boy howdy. Let
Brandon 34:47
me tell you Nelly ended up on this state fair. That crossover country album really dragged him down. And
Collin 34:55
he really he's never been able to quite get out of that right now. If you were driving in 1957 Farmall he probably holds up right out
Brandon 35:01
right he blasted get right back to the loo. Yeah. And do another thinking of Nellie things stomping in those Air Force ones. So what he was doing, was it those cowboy boots off Nilly. It also forces back on Oh, excuse me. Hold on. Are forces bigger
Collin 35:19
family now we understand I hear you St. Louis draw right? Or whatever it is. So now, so you could definitely understand what what what age bracket is very excited about this concert. And it's it is sold out.
Brandon 35:38
It's the 40 year olds. It's me. Yeah, me. Not me. But like, No, it's all the people that are my age now. Yes. Yep.
Collin 35:48
Who are hacking the stands? It's a sold out concert. So one will be had
Brandon 35:56
Yeah, we Yeah. So melee, come on, man, this is like, this is not doing.
Collin 36:04
So will we're gonna go back a second time. And this is when really we see all kinds of same stuff again, a little bit faster. But it's all what you got to touch points. You know, make sure everything's the same. And then now you can venture into like the Ag building, the economics Building. Building. And the four H building. Not well, this is where it's like, here's the best corn kernel of, of Missouri like this is this is the one. Here's how cotton, cotton grown like they judge cotton right that you can go see the the state's best cured ham. And what's great about the state's best cured ham is is right next to the second to the third, the fourth, the fifth, and then the unmarked hams and you cannot tell
Brandon 36:46
me somebody can tell the difference. Somebody's not me. Exactly.
Collin 36:49
Not being a ham. chronologist I don't know. What, what, what what the difference is they? They do what they know. I mean, yes, but they speak ham so they can can discern and divine which one's the better one. And we get to sit in Marvel and then you get to see like, here's the squash and here's the thing, like, we go through that you know they have you can go and buy their corners of the fair we can go buy a hot tub or your solar panels or your now you know you're going to
Brandon 37:21
buy things at the fair. Fair markup is insane. Right is probably like $20 billion. Plus, a lot of them are like vendors and it's like people that like it's not like a dude selling hot tub. It's like a hot tub company. And this is like their booth at the fair because other people see it right. Like, like, yes. things because I know people that used to work at like, they sell like sightseeing or something and then they would go to like those kinds of things and just have a hey, have you thought about how your sighting is looking? It's like, I don't know. How are you? How was your fence do it right? Yes.
Collin 37:55
Yes. So we then we avoid those areas because those are a part of the fair. Yeah, you don't by me, they're not the fun part. No, no, but no corndogs over there. Is not you have I go ring them. Exactly. There's no point. So we then usually that second or third time we're hitting the
Brandon 38:21
why the animal horns? Okay, because it's a while you're humming Hi, I just found out what the duck throw contest is. Oh, is in fact throwing a numbered and it says number duck. So I'm assuming that is a rubber duck. Like, closest to the hula hoop. And you win. Oh, yeah, I feel like that's what is no actual no ducks were harmed in the making of this game. But I want to see the big version of this. I want a rubber duck Travie che This is what Yes, what needs to happen.
38:52
And you know, the State Fair just purchased like 200 Extra acres. So they've got the room for this. That's right. For duck watching that right I think I think that's definitely definitely in their wheelhouse.
Brandon 39:05
Pneumatic duck cannon. Come on. Who doesn't want that? Yeah. Oh,
Collin 39:18
that's amazing. Yeah. See, that's what people need. That's a main stage.
Brandon 39:24
It's true. Also, I had another wandering thought, why are you doing this?
Collin 39:30
What are the four H's? Do we know?
Brandon 39:35
Does anybody know? What that means? That I know that the four H club exists and I know I've heard about it for I don't know what do they stand for something? Like what are surely what is the look, I'm on the four h website right now and it does not tell me. It just tells me there are in fact four of them. But what
Collin 39:56
are they? Right? That is right
Brandon 40:00
Don't know apparently, it is giving young people access to opportunity. That's a very vague answer for age. I think we could probably do better than that. Got it. about it, about it about it.
Collin 40:15
Okay. Ready? Yes. Head art hands health good hands and they are the four values members work on through fun and engaging programs. So the four h is focused on helping your head helping you learning understanding the world around you. heart this is probably giving and loving your neighbor kind of thing. Hands is working. And then health is taking care of yourself and your body. Which could
Brandon 40:45
also be your heart the same heart diseases real people
Collin 40:50
never believed in cause of death. Yeah, right. Okay, there we go. I found it I know that now. I just learned that law right right now okay to do under the force pledge here's the for its pledge ready. I pledge my head to clear thinking my heart to greater loyalty my hands to larger service and my health to better living for my club, my community my country and my world and I probably some of the demon behind me
41:17
so I
Collin 41:22
try not to speak incantations just out in the open like that. Usually I don't I don't have a truck, a pentagram or anything around me. So okay, fine. Ah. So I learned something today. See, go see the four H club. They've got a building for the do for its things. Ah, but yeah,
Brandon 41:39
like I know, people that do for each stuff. I've like talked to them. I've seen the jackets and the T shirts. But I didn't know what the four H's were until just right now. So there we go. Okay. Thank you. Yes.
Collin 41:53
So yeah, we don't we don't do the events, you know, we'll wander around to their to their neon, we'd like to go see the animal barns. It's kind of neat to see, after the judging is done. Because people are a little bit more likely to talk to you. They're a little bit more relaxed or not quite so. Right. It's very stressful.
Brandon 42:10
It's a stressful world of animal showing.
Collin 42:12
Oh, yeah. So I hear, I don't know, for sure. But yes, so this totally makes sense. So they're a little bit more relaxed. Sure. There aren't as many because many have left at this point. But you got a smaller number. And they're more likely to you know, talk to you and do things like that. So that's, that's fine. And then you just kind of wander around in sight. See, people see people watch and head out. So that was that was our that's the report from the fair. butter cow was in the window. Ah, yes. Very nice. Yeah, yep. And then, and then we came home. And the next day I was running a tumble clean on our washing machine. Because you do that every now and then with a front load washer, just to keep everything smelling good and fresh, clean. And then I noticed that there's little sign on a little placard that their little trucks monitor of it, you know, little screen that said, not draining, check hose and filter. Mm hmm. I will check the hose and we'll check the hoses. I'll take the drain hose out of the wall. And I'll just shove it into my shop back and I'll suck it out. And if I get water out of that, right, I have to drain the water out of this thing anyway, so I do that I get all drained out. And then I open up the filter. And the filter is clean as a whistle. So I shoved the shop back around in there and I go Wiggle, wiggle Wiggle stuff and nothing comes out. I dumped the water. There's no lot of anything in there. So I'm like, okay, that's kind of weird. Hang up the
43:52
drain backup, run a small load, test it cycle cycle cycle, not draining check hose and filter. And I was like, Oh no. Oh, so this time I was like, Okay, I will drain everything down. And then I will I will start it back up. And I'll stand by it. And I'm just gonna listen. It's gonna listen to and I'm listening to it.
Brandon 44:15
Again, view.
Collin 44:16
I know, I was like, well, because I was like, I got diagnosed something like, I know what this thing is supposed to sound like, I've owned it. Eight years like i i But I most the time you push the button and you walk away. So now I'm like, Well, I'm gonna stand here and I'm gonna watch the darn thing. And I stand there. And I I hear it running and it's spinning and doing all that stuff and then I hear the most anemic sound coming from underneath it. And I go
Brandon 44:42
oh, the pump is bad. I was gonna say, probably not pumping it out. If it's gas I'm going
Collin 44:49
Yes, it is going in and it's like it's like ticking as well. Like, I don't know. That's the stats the sound that's coming from underneath. Oh, no. So I, I stopped, and I drain it. And then I'm like I will. I don't have a lot of time on my hands. I will call a, an appliance repairman to come out and do this. I'll call. That's what I will do. I will, I will have somebody come out and take care of this. So I sit to Google, and I start calling places. And the first two are like, yeah, what kind is it? And I was like, oh, it's an LG. Oh, we don't service LG. They're made in Korea. And I went, Oh, okay. Like, is this?
Brandon 45:37
Is this a 1990s? Like auto mechanic shop? Like,
Collin 45:40
we don't work on them. Toilet is around here. Is this the subtle racism I've been waiting for? Like, I think it is right. Do you know who died? They were like, no. Advice. The second person was like, you may call this person. Okay, I'll call that person I call them. And they don't answer. So then I get back to Google. And I'm like, What in the world is this? So I call a fourth person, and they pick up and they're like, Hey, what's going on? Tell them what's going on. They're like, yeah, it's a weak point, those Korean models and I'm like, Oh, my gosh.
Brandon 46:21
What if the South Korean electronic powerhouse is mighty? Okay, they calm down.
Collin 46:31
I'm left laughing at this. But it was like, What? What is going on?
Brandon 46:36
Also, another side note, I just learned that LG is short for lucky Goldstar a lot of learning going on, continue.
Collin 46:47
And he's like, granted, I called this call this person yesterday, which dear listeners was on a Tuesday. And he said, Oh, where are you? Where do you live? And I said, Oh, well, the next time we're making a run through there will be ah, and he set a date. I looked at the date. And I went in my head I went well, wait, no, no, like I'm meeting service on this because it's not working. And he was like, yes, yes, I understand and your listeners, right. And this was a date a week and a half away which I said is said okay, well, I go ahead and put us down on that and you know, look forward to seeing you then to then I went to Google again only this time the YouTube Google the real answers. And I said to myself, I says however like I will judge this and this is what I do I go How long is this how to video and that will determine whether I really want to get into this okay. And you have to take the average length of the How To videos because some
Brandon 47:56
say unlike this show people edit their videos, losers
Collin 48:02
and they're like yes, and they're like we're going to unscrew this and then that's a fast cut to it being unscrewed the whole thing disassembled and you're like what? You're missing. Yeah, right. Like I'm gonna unscrew
Brandon 48:10
this one screw and then it cuts and there's like seven screws on the ground you're like yep, wait a minute.
Collin 48:17
I took the average time and the average time for each one of these was roughly 15 minutes and one of those the guy just literally had a camera set up over his shoulder the entire time. And I went okay, I can do that. I can I can disassemble stuff and put it back in my only problem now is I have to figure out how fast can I get a pump to me because that's another thing I need to get at
Brandon 48:39
is the real trick here. Ah like pump where do I find pump? How can I get it here
Collin 48:46
and then I go well first I need to search all of my local supply stores right because surely this pump will be local like some surely in our town there'll be something where I can pick up No It's Korean. No. Korean bottle No He's Korean pumps. Fine.
Brandon 49:04
I even have Korea we love you I just want you to do this. This is terrible.
Collin 49:08
Well, for one like low it's like a call and I said hi you sell this you sell these kind of washing machines and they went yes we do. We do not then they said we do not sell replacement parts in store if you want to order replacement parts you must go through Lowe's dot com slash parts or whatever. And it's a whole ordering process to get these parts to you. They do not keep anything in store Sutherlands does not Menards does not farm at home does not Tractor Supply does not appliance repair store does not everybody orders all of these things in to make sense
Brandon 49:45
because like you don't really need I mean, it's not good. You don't. You don't need to keep an inventory of like various washing machine pumps. Right because like that's just a lot of shelf space is gonna eat up at it, someone may or may not buy in the next five years, right like
Collin 50:04
this concert. Like, again, I had this, this pump has been around for eight years. So if that's the replacement frequency of these, it doesn't make sense to keep these on. And I understand to the number of makes models varieties out there. And I also know that many manufacturers will use the same part over and over and over and over and over again to kind of help with this. But over the course of 20 years, that's 1000s upon 1000s of different makes and models of washers and dryers. So keeping all those parts in one location, impossible. And I get that and totally understand. It's just now frustrating because it's like, I hate because I need one. I need one now. So then you go to Amazon, because that's where you just always go and you're like, Oh my God, but Jesus, why is this 70 five.no? Okay, that's out. So then I got to dig through, like, parts bulk.org. Net slash, like I'm reading through forums to figure out what models are actually appropriate for my model, because it's now just, you go to the, the service manual for the machine, and they don't give a part number. They're just like the ID, the part number is the pump for this model of washing machine. That's the part number and you're like, that's not actually what I just yeah,
Brandon 51:22
it's three years, that is not helpful. Eight D, eight more washing machine.
Collin 51:30
I'm trying to track this down, and I'm digging back into the archives. And I'm like, okay, found it. Now I've got to go take, I've got to take my model number and I'm going to paste that across the Internet and figure out where this is. And then you go, Is this is this the OEM like, is this the manufacturers number or is this the, this the sellers model number for this, and so you've got to figure that out. And then you finally found it for a reasonable price. And they're like, we can have this to you in a week and a half, and I was on
52:00
believable is
Collin 52:03
not acceptable, acceptable. So I go back to digging, and I'm now at this point of like, I'm so willing to Better Shipping, I'll pay for Better Shipping. But a lot of these places are like we offer one shipping method slow. So I finally found one, and I'm replying. So I ordered that in. And then I said to myself, my next several days are going to be very busy. I'm going to go ahead and disassemble the washing machine so that when the pump arrives, I can just throw it in and get everything put back together. So I start the disassembly, process them while I'm doing the disassembly process, because I am my father's son. I'm like well, it's a little dirty underneath here. So I also need to clean. So then I'm like spraying with vinegar and rubbing. Like vacuum, then I'm like, Well, I've got it out from the wall anyway, I might as well vacuum and sweep behind it in the
Brandon 53:05
good days. One is having a
Collin 53:10
side note to this while I was using my, my, my shop back, I noticed that my shop back was quite dirty. So I cleaned shop. While anyway, that's not
Brandon 53:20
important, that hurts me to listen to that I don't really know if it's like
Collin 53:26
clean the outside because it was a little bit. That's fine, but it's not important. Nobody cares. So I'm taking just assembling it. And then I'm just assembling this. And then I realize I realized Brandon, that, Oh, I have to take all of these little pieces off. And so that means that I'm also accessing a part of the machine that actually has been broken for a year and some change and I have not bothered by then I'm like, right, because the washing machine dome light has been burnt out for a year and some change. We've had a washing machine with no light on the inside. So now I'm like no, how
Brandon 54:12
will you ever manage? So today,
Collin 54:15
I turned to Megan and I said Megan I have this all disassemble. The pump is coming. Do you want the light replace before she could answer? Lillian from across the room went yes so I found that pardon, it's being replaced. So it's just right there like like if I was what I did was I was disassembling and then I was like well, it looks like I'm heading in this direction. So I watched a video on how to replace the dome White and I was having to do all of the same steps to get to this point like seriously the the pump is just like two more bolts beyond what I'm where I'm at to replace the dome light. So I'm like, Well, I have to go past this to get So I might as well so that's coming now originally the shipping was like we'll get there in like two to three days and I was like perfect two to three days fine I don't have to worry about to go into the laundromat or anything will be perfectly fine. Now they're like, well, it could be like four to five and I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, no. This is not going in the wrong direction.
55:27
So we have
Collin 55:28
a fully disassemble that fully, but mostly just assembled. Beautifully cleaned, watching watching it ready, ready for a new pump and dome light it's kind of a physical representation of how I feel in my life right now to project in the middle of my kitchen just spread out everywhere
55:57
just waiting for somebody to
Brandon 56:04
see once again you're let down by outside forces right that stuff pump people to me it's the copy people all they tend to see it's just the theme here. Like it was gosh, I would oh I did it. I didn't know I didn't realize that like who's gonna back up here minute I did not realize that this like like, oh, we can't fix it that it's from Korea, like what? Where are all washing machines is there like a our washing machines like a stalwart Made in America situation? And I was unaware of like, because like everything else is not. So why would washing machines be like such a sticking point? What is what these washing machine repair guys like what?
Collin 56:56
So what I did, I did kind of probe on this. And I am led to believe that the Korean manufacturing techniques are not the same as everybody else.
Brandon 57:13
The Chinese manufacturing, the Chinese manufacturing.
Collin 57:17
Yes. Now, I don't know what that means. But it was like So apply in different
Brandon 57:28
bolts like I don't know a pan has different bolts technically. Right. I've been screws. Sorry. That's metal screws. Wow. Wow. Sorry. Okay. I know that Japanese Industrial Standard is a screw. Okay.
Collin 57:45
Yeah, go get right. So I'm, I, I just this whole thing has just been like, okay, like, Are We Now out now? I had no problem taking any of this apart. It was quite a therapeutic process. If I'm just being very, very real.
Brandon 58:02
Did you feel very gave me? Right? Yeah.
Collin 58:04
Taking apart. I didn't have to. I didn't want to strip any bolts or anything. So I was quite careful with taking things apart disassembling them. And yes, I did. Like, again, this thing is it's eight years old and it gets used. Okay. Let's be very real with my family. Like, like three times a day. Like it's just calm. Your
Brandon 58:24
daughter changes clothes like night, he was like nine outfit changes per day. So like, this is like,
Collin 58:30
it's real. It is. It's really real. Oh my gosh. So I did have to have that conversation of like, okay, buckaroos, we're gonna sit down. We're gonna have a conversation right now.
Brandon 58:42
We're gonna talk about wearing jeans more than once. It's, it's okay.
Collin 58:46
I did. I was like, I need everybody to just look at me and we're going to commit to not like I just said, every clothing item must be worn at least twice. Twice. That's I'm like, really? I'm asking. And there was some grumbling and I've had to have to get caught up with people and be like, ah, what? When did you when did that last touch you right? Back here.
Brandon 59:15
Like a clothing checklist. Okay, I know. This is like take snapshots. A Tuesday. 9am. Tuesday 11:30am.
Collin 59:27
I almost need to just have everybody plan out. They're like we're going on a trip
59:31
off. Oh, yeah. Really?
Collin 59:34
It really should just be like, Okay, what's your what's tomorrow look like people. Talk to me here. So, so we wait. We wait. And unfortunately, if most things don't show up by
59:52
Friday,
Collin 59:53
I have to I have to leave for this weekend to go train and do some visits. So it's Hang on a time budget. And I, what I don't want to have happen is I don't want the pump to arrive. And then like the the light get delayed, because I want to do both of these at the same time. I don't want to anyway. So
Brandon 1:00:12
once you also don't want us to leave for multiple days with a washing machine torn to pieces in the middle of your children.
Collin 1:00:19
Right? Yes. So that's where the less than ideal in the most you know. Yeah, plainly stated sense of the in the manner. So we'll we will see what happens here. But that is that his says well, we will wait for the culmination of the of the washing machine saga. Wow, man, that is
Brandon 1:00:51
a lot taking
Collin 1:00:53
me. Meanwhile, meanwhile, totally changing yours with a few of our staff members. So I was like, you know, what, what if we, what if we didn't onboard one person at a time? That's too slow? That's too What if we did throw? Can we do three at the same time? In one service area and one another? What if we did that? But if we wouldn't that be fine, wouldn't it? I'm gonna go with no. My guess is it's not going to be fun. Right? However. I will say that way we have it is which could we had somebody who was working Monday through Friday mornings and they're like, Well, my other job has offered me more consistent hours and was like, okay, that's fine. So they're working Tuesday, Thursday. So I have a Monday, Wednesday, Friday morning and afternoon position open. I have to train for that. Okay, so Monday was a Friday. That's one service area, I also have an evening position that has come available because someone's other schedule has
1:01:46
shifted around.
Collin 1:01:47
Unfortunately, the evening schedule is in the other service area. So no, so no, no. I am in one place in the evenings I'm in another. Now. I will say that. In one of the service areas, I have a lot of very experienced staff members who what I'm planning on is I'm going to do two days of this with a new staff member and then I'm going to pass them off to the experience people and say you follow and train.
Brandon 1:02:17
They see there we go. That's what we need.
Collin 1:02:20
Okay. So utilizing the resources. So, hopefully it won't break anything too terribly. But good to be fine.
Brandon 1:02:46
Speaking of culminating events and you like that one, right, there we are. Oh, wait, I was gonna take one more thing, right. Ah, I'll start. The other thing that I have to do this week, guys. Very important is what to share this day because hilarious. We are tomorrow. As part of our like, the thing like one of the local churches always like makes lunch for us. All right, the whole thing. So it's like a church potluck, basically, you know, like that. But I have to prepare for this. Okay, I have to do some homework. I have to get ready. Because one of the guys that works there, like he worked at school for a long time. He was actually Susan's went to Susan's teachers, right. He's a super nice guy. But every time I see him, he's uh, he gives me the old handshake and he'll slap on the back. Right, you know? And he's he goes, Hey, heard any good jokes lately? So I
Collin 1:03:46
have to make sure I'm where'd I have to be prepared
Brandon 1:03:52
for him? So hey, pressures on gotta get a good one. Right? When I say Good joke, I mean, of course. A bad joke right? This house right like you mean dad joke type situation, but I think the one that here you go, Hey, test and test it out. Ready? Hey, Colin. Hey, where do pirates buy their hooks?
Collin 1:04:19
Where Where do pirates buy the hooks?
1:04:21
At the secondhand store?
Collin 1:04:29
Please sign up. Okay.
Brandon 1:04:33
That's my other big thing this week. I gotta get ready for my annual joke telling. Good community members. I think so. It's much more lighthearted than we find our intrepid hero Bilbo Baggins. Ah,
Collin 1:04:49
here we go. Can see that was good. That was good. That was that was much better segue. He's not having good time. Now like the opposite back, right? quite poorly.
Brandon 1:05:08
Again, we have this getting worse. We have the passage of time, although the opening line of this chapter. Now the days passed slowly in warily.
Collin 1:05:19
Oh, boy. Right? Yes, it's bad. Yeah, yet again, it
Brandon 1:05:26
has sort of Thorens full blown descent into madness, right. Like he's just collapsing in on himself. Right? Like a dying star, just morale like imploding. Right. It's not going very good for him. Nope. At all. And we, interestingly, right, we are awaiting people. Right, Evan? Like, are you know, he's Bilbo is very weary and afraid of of him because they've called for reinforcements. Right? They've they're looking for Dane. Which historians cousin? Yes, we're gonna go with cousin is coming. Right? To reinforce them to help in this situation or whatever. But
Collin 1:06:21
of course, the messenger, obviously, is this is Raven, because, you know, dwarves don't speak thrush? Nope.
Brandon 1:06:33
So we have this Raven comeback. And I was reading this. And I was realizing like, this is one of those. This is another. Like, one of those. This is like a very old, kind of like, trope, I guess of like the wise Raven, right? It's applied to this wave. And he's very old, and he's very wise, even give her counsel to Thorin, which seems very wise, of course, toward me, or is it? Because he's, you know, that cannot be swayed. He's under the spell of the Dragon gold or whatever. Oh, yeah. But we have this instance of the wise Raven offering Council, which again, is a very old trope, right? It's a very like Norse thing, right? It's like Odin stuff. Right? So this is kind of some of that. Tolkien studying old mythologies and stuff sort of peeking in around the corner, we have some of this like very old, kind of like North Germanic influence of like the raven and the wisdom and trying to share that with other people. But in this case, it's being blatantly ignored, right? Which is kind of like a that's like a red flag for what's about to happen. It's like, oh, oh, right. You have this symbol of wisdom, speaking to you, right, telling you what to do. And then you blatantly ignore it and tell it No, I will not do that. Okay, this is some, like, foreshadowing a red flag in your face, right? Like, oh, no alerts, badness is going to happen if you do this, because, you know, this,
Collin 1:08:06
this, why is that being is
Brandon 1:08:10
counseling you you're blatantly ignoring it. So I that's kind of why I took away from this opening part here, which I thought was very interesting. Yes,
1:08:20
it does have this, this sense of like, kind of a, like a We warned you kind of thing. Yeah. From this of like, okay, like, just know that this is not something that we agree is a good idea.
Collin 1:08:35
Yeah, exactly. So,
Brandon 1:08:37
that's, that's kind of where we're starting. That's this we're setting the scene here. Looks like we're definitely have like a, an era of impending doom. Right, right. Kind of coming here. Which is interesting. Right? And so Bilbo has now he comes up with a plan.
1:08:54
Right? He's decided he is going to take the Arkenstone and which he still has, which he hasn't told anybody about. And he's gonna sneak out with it. Yeah, that's his plan.
Collin 1:09:10
This isn't this is up. This is our Oh, this is a doozy of a plant and wine honestly that like you don't, you don't. Don't really see coming. It Yeah. So drastic of a change. It really is. whereby it, it takes it takes the kind of where you thought this was going of like this just to me this just shows a bill goes to character coming through of like he is very fed up with this, like he is really fed up with what's going on. And he knows that something drastic really has to take place or this before because he knows that things are going to get out of hand over they already are out of hand and that the only thing that he can have that is going to bargain with them and try and get some sense into what is going on is this thing that he has, and he has to part with it. And he knows the immense value he knows. And he also I think, as it seemed the power it has over over doors in particular.
Brandon 1:10:13
Yeah. But I also think it's interesting, because we've seen a lot of acts of courage on billboards are already right, yeah, we've seen him stand up to the trolls and kind of talk to them. We've seen him, you know, stand up to Gollum. Right, these, we've seen him stand up to goblins and wolves, and all this stuff, and elves and stuff. But now Thorin is taking a stand, and he is standing up against
Collin 1:10:47
Thorin. His friend.
Brandon 1:10:52
Right, so this is sort of like the ultimate showcase of courage, right? Because it's very easy to stand up against, like,
Collin 1:10:59
not easy, but like, you know, I mean, it's, it's, it's easier
Brandon 1:11:04
to stand up to an outside threat or an outside force, but standing up to somebody that you care about and respect and trusted until recently. And being like, know, what you're doing is wrong. And I don't want to be a part of it. Right? This little section is like, like, the ultimate showcase of courage
Collin 1:11:30
from Bilbo. Right? Because that is, that is the hardest thing to do. You know, is to stand up to somebody that you are close to, and say that you're wrong. And I don't want to be carried anymore. That's tough, you know? Yes. And again, he's leaving. You can definitely feel the heat. He knows what a sense of betrayal this has, through this act. And like it like not just because he can't just Hawk it over the hill. Yeah. Like he, he has to be the one to, to carry this valuable thing being sought after to surrender it over. Like he has to carry that over to the quote unquote, enemy, right, the people who are besieging them, or you know how it's viewed from Thorin and the door side of things like he has to be the one who literally crosses that line of but it's but knowing it's for the good of everybody.
Brandon 1:12:32
And so that's what he does, right? He goes up there. He tells the guy and watch bomber. Yeah, you look tired. Oh, I can't sleep anyway. I'll be on watch for a little while you just go rest. And Bombur as we have seen has no trouble sleeping. Right? And so as soon as you sleep Bill was like, jumps over the scales out and takes off, right puts his ring on, obviously and then takes off running towards the Dale were the elves in the middle of Lake town or in camped? Right. Side note, because that's the theme of the theme of this episode is I just wanted to point out that I think it's absolutely hilarious. That in dwarf customs here, like when, when you are saying like when Bob was talking, he's like, oh, you know, whenever you want to say something nice about somebody. You say like May May your beard grow longer? Oh, yeah. Right. And then if you're like cursing somebody, you say, Hey, your beard hairs fall out, right? That's like, like all the all the
Collin 1:13:38
very, very beard
Brandon 1:13:41
centric or beard centric culture here in dwarfism, dwarfed them. I rather, which makes sense, right? It's like they're, yeah, they talk about it a lot. So I just, I find that
Collin 1:13:51
little detail. very humorous.
Brandon 1:13:54
That that's part of the dwarf culture of, of like, showing respect, or cursing somebody, it's all centered around their beard, right? Which I think I'm going to start incorporating into my life and so like cursing somebody and swearing at them. I'm just going to be like, I hope you beard falls off. Oh, right. I'm gonna channel my inner dwarf. And I'm gonna say
Collin 1:14:14
these kinds of insults are amazing, because nobody who expects to be who expects that to come out like it's very much like, I'm sorry, what like, what do you just say?
Brandon 1:14:24
Yeah, right. I feel like that's something that I need to incorporate
Collin 1:14:28
into my vocabulary. Just because I think it's funnier.
Brandon 1:14:33
You can use that much more socially, right? You're not gonna get like leered at by actually saying like, naughty words in public, but you can be like,
Collin 1:14:42
Ah, I hope your beard withers and falls off like, oh, it's fantastic. Yeah,
Brandon 1:14:48
I feel like that is something I'm going to try to do here from now. Yes,
Collin 1:14:56
I stand behind this belief. So you know, Go forth.
Brandon 1:15:00
Right. So anyway, as Bilbo is sneaking, right, he sneaks right into the river and falls in. Sounds good. Good job. Some burglar burglar. Um he made it as far away as dark you know deep the water was kind of check your water Turn Around Don't Drown people out it's important but he falls in the water so the elves now hear him and
Collin 1:15:29
he gets offended. Like, like a servant from the public servant indeed.
Brandon 1:15:36
Like a servant of the enemies like excuse you, I'm sorry.
Collin 1:15:42
I just again this like, it's very comical because you could just imagine somebody being like, in the midst of all of this, like II is personally offended that someone would think he's a servant of what's like, okay,
Brandon 1:15:56
fair. Well, and the elves will like really know what to do with them. So like, what are what are you doing? He's like, I need to speak to your king and they're like, and bards. Specifically, I want to see Bard, and they're like,
Collin 1:16:08
Wow, okay, fine, like but they do they take
Brandon 1:16:16
him over. And they he meets with the king and Bard, right, the elf King, right? Apparently, around, we'll doesn't get a mention here, but that's who it is. And they're like, What are you doing? And it was like, Oh, hey, here, I want to show you something blam. And he just dropped it on him. You know? Because he's worried about Bilbo Right? Or not whatever. But he's worried about Thor, and he's like, you're gonna starve to death. We got to do something, we need to break the siege. We don't want to see. We don't want to fight each other. He's like, I don't want to see anybody fighting. This is ridiculous. And, you know, he just like says, Oh, well, I have something you can bargain with. And then like,
Collin 1:16:59
just hands on the Arkenstone. And they're like,
Brandon 1:17:05
especially Thranduil. Because he knows what the elf king he like knows what it is. And he's just like,
Collin 1:17:10
dumbfounded. Like, what do you
Brandon 1:17:16
think he's like the amazement, like they can't even figure out like, Why do you have this? How do you have this? And why are you giving it to us? Why not just run away with it? Right? And he's like, No, you need it. Give it to you. Go. There's a lot of explaining about, he's justifying why he could do this. He's like, Well, they told me I could have a share and bla bla bla bla bla here, and basically saying, I want you to use this store and we'll bargain for this. Right? He said, There's nothing that you have that he wants. Now, here's something that you have that he wants. So there you go,
Collin 1:17:56
really changed, change changes the I mean, it really takes that and kind of levels the field real quick. with what's going on. Yeah. So he's just like, okay,
Brandon 1:18:07
here you go. And they're like, Can we do anything for he's like, not really, I gotta go, because they're gonna miss me. So I gotta get back and they're like, What do you mean go back? He's like, Yeah, I gotta go. I gotta go be with my friends. And they're just like, adults.
Collin 1:18:22
Yeah, well, I love this when he says, When Bart says, Why are you telling us this? Are you betraying your friends? Or are you threatening us? And Bilbo copes
1:18:33
it you're barred? squeaked Bilbo. Don't be so hasty. I have never met such suspicious folk. I am merely trying to avoid trouble for all concerned. Now I will make you an offer. Like I feel like he's again he's offended. And this just shows how out of place Bilbo is in this world where Bard is dill used to dealing with and being around the lake master, right of like, yeah, scheming, conniving, backstabbing. All these things going on. And, and I'm sure the Elven king as well and everybody's used to all these ulterior motives and everything being dark and secret bubble, blah. And Bilbo is just like, No,
1:19:08
I'm tired of this. Like, I just wanted to stop.
Collin 1:19:12
And he is worried in New York is that he is worried about Thorens well being and he is he is worried about his friends. And he's worried about the well being of the people in the camp that he's sitting at, like, he just wants everybody to get what they need to move on from this.
Brandon 1:19:25
Yeah, it's pretty crazy. And they agree, and they're like, Okay, and he leaves, but on his way out, he bumps into somebody, right? He's just like, running by and somebody yells at him and he turns around and oh, there's a handoff making his grand return. Oh. It's quite wonderful. It's funny too, because they're like, you know, he's, he's just like, oh, well, okay. Anyway, He's really excited. And he's happy to see him. But he's like, I gotta go, though. So, but it gives him some encouragement. Right Gandalf his back are encouraging, hopeful symbol is back. And so he's like, there's unpleasant time, just in front of you. But keep your heart up. You may come through it. All right. There's good news brewing that even the Ravens have not heard.
Collin 1:20:25
And he goes on, right?
Brandon 1:20:29
He hurries off back to the gate where he climbs over and wakes up. Bombur.
Collin 1:20:38
And, yep, just goes right back into this. And yeah, and he's, it was soon fast asleep, forgetting all his worries till the morning. As a matter of fact, he was dreaming of eggs and bacon. So there's this still this, this this call, like, amongst this, like monumentous decision. The turmoil going on around. He's like, just the plain, simple, basic driving factors of eggs and bacon sure would be nice right now. Right? Like it's a makes very homely.
Brandon 1:21:07
Yeah, that's true. Because he's still he just wants to go home. Right? He wants us to be done. He wants everyone to be okay. And he wants to leave. Right, which, you know, I can understand that. This makes sense. Right. So he goes to bed. And then we go to our next chapter, and boiboi just want to talk for a minute about we haven't mentioned chapter names. Too much. No, right? In passing, right. There's a couple of Chapter names in this book that are very appropriate. I think none more so than chapter 17. The clouds burst by very apropos. Holy cow. So listeners, you know, a cloud burst is like an extreme like sudden downpour of rain. Right kind of comes without warning. And then there's like, a huge rain, like all of a sudden. And that's, that is basically what this chapter comes out of nowhere. And all of a sudden, it's a huge deluge of crazy, like, just all over the place.
Collin 1:22:20
Yeah, it really is very, very befitting to what we're about to run through, like, really, this. This chapter takes the big that takes the pacing of what we've learned with variants, just is like, Yeah, remember all that time of like, br and like how we like we're really like, soaking up a lot of our downtime, no downtime, we're just going like there's a gap show many details. Just get like, push like Stover through or to push this thing through like it really this this chapter feels in that respect, it feels very out of place for the rest of the book that we've just gone through back
Brandon 1:23:02
because it's just so
Collin 1:23:04
damn, like all over. But it drives home the point of mayhem and chaos, all the more of like, of just how quickly everything moves, like, like, in that respect. It gets that point across very
Brandon 1:23:19
well. Yeah, it's kind of just like a It's all coming to a big head. Everything is just nuts. And it's just all gone. Crazy, right? Yes. That's really kind of how this goes. And so we start off with the the messengers come back. Right? Kind of starts off slow, same thing, messengers come back. But now it's the king Bard and an old man. Wink Wink, wink, wonder who the heck
Collin 1:23:46
no one could now there's no way if possibly
Brandon 1:23:49
get through that.
Collin 1:23:52
Yeah. Right.
Brandon 1:23:55
And he's like, why are you back? Blah blah Thorens saying this he's like, why are you back? I told you, you or your friends have nothing to offer me. And they basically go Oh, yeah. What about this and they open this box
Collin 1:24:13
and hold up
1:24:16
the Arkenstone and Thorin is quote stricken down with amazement and confusion. Which I mean yes, because
Brandon 1:24:28
the last you heard that was supposed to be inside the mountain to buy is barred. Have it now right? Why? Yes.
Collin 1:24:40
Yep, you can imagine like this is something that he has been searching and searching and searching and searching for.
Brandon 1:24:46
And it's gone literally crazy over this like Yes.
Collin 1:24:50
Yeah, he's driven himself mad by this. And to see it suddenly being held aloft as if it were nothing like you would imagine this was like the offset what like what Is that so? I definitely understand his
Brandon 1:25:04
concern. Yeah, so He's furious. He's raging he's yelling he's How did you get this and Bilbo B and below says I gave it to them rages honest I did it because like I did, too which stores responses obviously anger right he's You miserable Hobbit you undersized burglar right because that's all he can come up with and he's like furious that he's been betrayed yes I buy a Bilbo right? And he you know, Bilbo tells him man, listen, you told me I could do with this I whatever. I just I want this is what I wanted. And authority basically kicked him out. Get out, get out of here. But not before. I guess probably importantly, later, Gandalf reveals himself to Thorin these back because he's like I occurs. Gandalf. I wish he was here. I would beat him up and looks like right here full glam like yeah,
Collin 1:26:17
it's quite wonderful. But it's like
Brandon 1:26:20
well, yeah, so it's a Thor is up there just like throwing it. temper tantrum. Yeah. And and being all angry and, you know, candles kind of a thorough and you're not making a very splendid figure of a king under the mountain or you? Doesn't really Yes, like, oh, but you know, Ghana, but things may change yet. Right? Because, you know, Tolkien is kind of all about redemption. We've talked about that before a little bit. Maybe we'll see if that comes in. Because Gandalf is hinting like yeah, you know, there's still time for him. Still time is also real quick. Like how
Collin 1:27:03
up Gandalf says, If you don't like my burglar, please don't damage him.
Brandon 1:27:07
Yeah, give him back to me. Which is,
Collin 1:27:10
which is something that's kind of been a common theme of like, don't complain about my burglar. Like, don't go find my burglar that you lost or you know that like, it's, it's funny how, like, yet again, it's like, if you don't like him, don't don't do things. Don't be hasty. Sure, anyway, like, Sure.
Brandon 1:27:26
And even even after all this, even after seeing Thorens response, even after being thrown out of the mountain, right, like Bilbo is parting words is farewell. May we meet again as friends. Yeah, right. Like he's still hopeful. Right and optimistic. Right? about this. How this can have a resolution.
Collin 1:27:51
It's not hard.
Brandon 1:27:57
But let's move on here. Dane shows up. Right. The door of reinforcements have come. They are that now we get like a lot of like really crazy detail about more dwarfs because we've only seen like, kind of raggedy traveling doors. Right like Warren's company, kind of like ragtag. They don't really have a lot. They're kind of like, disheveled and bright. They've been on the road for a long time. So they're, they're kinda like they don't they're not in their elements, right? But now we have the juxtaposition of the Danes door from the iron hills of like, full armored Dwarven contingent, right and they're either kind of is like big detailed about like, fully armored hauberk and all this stuff like way so it's a very, very different figure. Then the doors are Thorin. Right. I also like to detail that their beards were tucked into their belts, just to keep them out of the way when they're very tidy. Very tidy. Yes, they are. Also he mentioned a lot that they fight they have their wielding heavy two handed medics test, and I had to look up what a medics was. Oh, right. I didn't know. Apparently, it's that thing like half adds half pickaxe
Collin 1:29:31
spayed or whatever kids got flat on one side, right?
Brandon 1:29:34
Well, it's like, it's like yeah, it's like flat and then like the pig that's like, turned. It's like a mining tool. Like it. Yeah,
Collin 1:29:41
it's not not not it's not flat as in an axe, but because if you took that hat and you turn it around,
Brandon 1:29:46
ads, where it's like horizontally flat, yes. Right. And then the pickaxe part is like, vertically. Kind of flat. It's weird. tumbling. I didn't know that was a Maddix. I didn't know what that thing was called. But apparently it's Cymatics I had to google that. And it's interesting that they are fighting with what appears to be a digging tool. Well, he's very dwarfee. Right there about it, right? Just like very Dwarven. Like, yes, we have a overbuilt, I'm imagining, like in the world of like medieval arms, there's a lot of like, things that were originally tools that were sort of turned into, you know, weapons of war, like a bill hook or like a halberd type situation, right? Yeah. So then they became like an overbuilt version of that. Because they were like, Oh, we could use this to fight, but we need to beef it up and make it stronger. So I have my mind. Now I'm looking at a Maddix, which is already kind of big button if you dwarf a phi that and like, exaggerate the features. Make it make it a war tool, right? Yeah, make it bigger and heavier and beefier, and a weapon of war that would be very formidable. And terrifying, right? So make sense. I'm imagining it's like that kind of evolution, right? Because we're like a bill hook. The reason a bill hook is a pull arm, or like a big long stick with like a hook and a spike on it. So the listeners don't know. And so they, this was a weapon issue to like common soldiers. Because a lot of them were familiar with tools that were similar. And so if you were a fie it and make it bigger and heavier and give it to them. They know how to use it just sort of automatically. Yeah, right. That it makes sense with a dwarf would do that as well, right? If you give a dwarf a tool that they would use in their everyday pursuits of mining, and then you take that and sort of transform it into a weapon of war, they would just automatically know how to use it. Yes. So that, that little detail really kind of jumped at me as well. Like, that's a very interesting kind of way of like a character. It's like a character design. Like, just, boom, like, right there. Like that tells you a lot about dwarves.
Collin 1:32:22
Just in like a sentence. Well, very interesting. Very, very practical, right? That's the other aspect of this. Like, it's a very practical tool, the familiarity with this of like, well, if this would break if this would cleave off a hunk of granite probably would hurt somebody running towards me. So let's start with that.
Brandon 1:32:46
Definitely, right. So Dane comes he announces himself. They have like a standoff, right between the men and the Elves and the dwarves right and personal right is hiding in the thing right?
Collin 1:33:00
I love this part of the story. Because you can just imagine like they're they don't they're not time to fight yet, but they're also like, but if you're ready to rumble like I guess we'll go like we can start now like we were gonna wait but okay
Brandon 1:33:23
Bart even kind of laughed it off. You know, he's like, Oh, yeah. You know, what adores know about fighting above ground? And the elf King is kind of like, well, you know, you know, but they're, you know, it's yes, hold on. Now now Yes.
Collin 1:33:47
Yeah. He said long will I Terry air I begin this war for gold towards Can I pass us unless we will or do anything that we cannot mark. Let's hope still for something that will bring reconciliation. Right. Something later, that could help some people start working together, right, maybe
Brandon 1:34:05
two paragraphs later. Clouds burst, right, like now. Right? So they were getting ready, you know, Bart and his friends and they had resolved
Collin 1:34:24
to strike. And all of a sudden, darkness came with a dreadful swiftness right. There are bats, birds, both birds.
Brandon 1:34:39
These are birds. bats come later have a cloud of birds swirling down from the north. Right. It is the goblins right the goblins have come down from I'm assuming You go, it's gotten too bad. Right? They talked about that a little bit. There's a lot of deep background about this. But the goblins basically have heard like they were talking earlier about they they kind of foreshadow this a few chapters ago when they said people will have heard that smog is dead and come to claim the gold. Well, the goblins heard about. So here they come. Because we know goblins don't like dwarves even had a whole war about it. Right? We get a little insight of that here get a little bit of history. The goblins are upon you. Bolg of the North is coming. Oh, Dane whose father use fluid? Moria? Yes. Oh, right. Oh, we see as OG down here that we talked about that. There's a long time ago, this mentioned that in passing the Oh, yeah, there was a goblin war blah, blah. Oh, turns out it's a little bigger. Some grudges happening, right. So the hatred of goblins and dwarves runs deep. And the goblins have decided that this is the dwarves will be distracted. And they should swoop in and try to work to their foe kind of right now, like in their time of,
Collin 1:36:09
you know, trouble or whatever. So
Brandon 1:36:14
wolves in war dogs are running coming. Right? They have the whole contingent of goblins is coming, right. And everyone's kind of like, oh, oh, no. Here's where it
Collin 1:36:29
says. So began a battle that none had expected. And that's an understatement. Quite a bit.
Brandon 1:36:38
Yep. And so, yeah, this part is very weird. This kind of goes on here, blah, blah. But like, basically now we have some years of Gandalf basically go, Hey, Dane, career care. We can talk about this. We can work we need to work together to fight the goblin. And you agree that we need to hold on for a minute and find some goblins together. I think that's reasonable. So come over here. And we'll make a plan real quick. Right. Huddle up. Gandalf basically gives him the old huddle upside career. Hello, let's go. Yes.
Collin 1:37:11
Stop agreeing and come here real
Brandon 1:37:12
quick. Yeah. Pretty much. So elf King, bar, Dane Gandalf. And they kind of plan out how they're gonna, like, they're, they're gonna form ranks, right? And see how to basically on the spurs of the mountain, like where the mountain comes down in the valley, right? They're gonna line up there and sort of meet them and kind of funnel and fork stuff there. And that's the plan. Right? And it's interesting here. Now we get some, like, we have a lot of detail about like, battle tactics.
Collin 1:37:48
I was just about to say, like, if like this is battle tactics galore. And it is, it is a little difficult to keep up with, like how the battlefield is being described positions and localities of people. Yeah, and how they're moving. And like, this is this gets dense, real fast. And it's, it's, it's not verbose in any way, because all of this is packaged, very succinctly, in, in these paragraphs through the section.
Brandon 1:38:19
Yeah, but it is jargony. Right? Like it's targeted is military jargon. You know, and it's like, what is this mean? I don't like ah. And so this is interesting, because,
Collin 1:38:41
like, you get a
Brandon 1:38:47
they give a lot, they throw a lot of words at you like Vanguard and blank and all this stuff, right. And like, Vanguard just means like, the front of the enemy. But like, you get a quick little insight here. And I think it's important to kind of this is some like, you know, they start all this out here, but this is these are things that Tolkien knows about, right? Because we rewind, about 20 years before this book was published. Right? Tolkien was a commissioned officer in World War One, right? He was like a lieutenant. Right? So commissioned officers have to go to like,
Collin 1:39:34
class, right, like military class and stuff and have like, crash courses and like,
Brandon 1:39:41
military strategy and things like that. So like he, he had to learn about this stuff. And he had to apply these things in, in real life. Right. Like he was in
Collin 1:39:54
France. In World War One. Right. He
Brandon 1:39:57
had a post in France, right? You did. dissipate in the Battle of the Somme, which is
Collin 1:40:03
chord right along with one of the worst things over there. So
Brandon 1:40:08
some of these words that he's just like throwing out there, these are things that just were sort of in his brain from that time, right? You kind of think about, like, where did they come from? Where did this inspiration come from? How did he know to talk like this? Because in his Philology, fill illogical. I don't know how you would say that. Yes, that one. It's a philologist, right? This is not as a thing that you're going to encounter. Right? And reading Anglo Saxon literature. You might come across a little bit of it, talk of battles here and there, but a lot of them are poems and laments and songs about afterwards. So it's not about like, the happening. It's about what happens after. And so this is a whole separate skill set, but he just kind of draws on whether consciously or not from his time as a lieutenant in the British Royal Army, right, yeah. Just kind of a weird little side note here. But I think that's where all this jargon comes from and how it gets why just gets thrown out, like, oh, yeah, go over here. And you go, there you go. There you go.
Collin 1:41:17
What? And he does a great job at throwing it all in there. But at the same time, you're like, I'm a bit lost.
Brandon 1:41:26
Because it means not long, right? You're like you said, it's like that looks a couple paragraphs right. The goblins moved here. They drew back into the valley. They moved over here like pincers well along the East River and blah, blah like this.
Collin 1:41:36
Well, that's the other part of like, really trying to have a good understanding of the layout or the geography of like, that's where all of a sudden this gets a bit hard to follow. Because then they're like, you know, like, then they marched and gathered by a hill and valley going over by tunnel and under dark. I mean, that's, that's the movement of the goblins army from the north to like, still, it's like, there's a lot here of like, the movements of large groups of people. Yeah, what I really need
Brandon 1:42:02
is a Wilson's Creek style light table of the Battle of the Five Armies, where I can see it's only five different colors of little light, bright lights on the table, and they keep to move in ranks. I can see how they move around.
Collin 1:42:19
But it I need this in my life.
Brandon 1:42:24
That's amazing. Red and blue arrows. stuff, right. That's what you need right here. Where's that? I want to see that. Yeah, this is what this is. This is what's needed.
1:42:41
Okay, well, we'll get on that. But what is clear, is that some of these Trixie, Trixie goblins have decided, Oh,
Brandon 1:42:52
what if we just go over top of the mountain instead, guests. Ah, so they go over the mountain and come down on top of everybody, which, as you can imagine, is terrible. Right. And there's immense fighting. The bodyguard of Bolg is mentioned several times. He doesn't even get a name. Poor guy. He's just there. Unnamed goblin bodyguard dude, fighting with Dame Right.
Collin 1:43:26
Like, is really going after it
Brandon 1:43:29
really is. It's just interesting that they mentioned this person. Goblin, whatever, like, repeatedly, and he doesn't get a name. Nope. Man. That's harsh. But you know, as it's not going well as the goblins have come over the top. So the other forces are pretty surrounded. They're kind of fighting back to back right, you get this kind of circled up Thorin and his warriors come out of the mountain and join the fray. Right? He comes out and he seems to have snapped out of it. Right? Because he just starts yelling to me to me, and everybody
Collin 1:44:25
goes to him. Right? It
Brandon 1:44:27
would make sense if it was the dwarves. Right? Because they were there for him. But he starts yelling to me to me, and
Collin 1:44:35
doors go. Man go. The elves even go.
Brandon 1:44:42
Even like, they're like, Okay. It's a good idea. And he has like, his presence and countenance has altered so dramatically
Collin 1:44:54
bad. His like,
Brandon 1:44:58
people are just insane. fired by him showing up and they were rushed to him to fight together. Which is crazy, right? Like, yeah. Part of this too
Collin 1:45:10
is in stark contrast to what Gandalf had just said of like, you know some king under the mountain you are in His coming through the gate. It says hood and cloak are gone. They were in shining armor and red light leapt from their eyes in the gloom at the Great Dwarf gleamed like gold and a dying fire. The gold is flowing from the mountain in the goodness and riches as the king under the mountain exits to claim what's his right is it's a triumphant.
Brandon 1:45:41
Yeah. Of interest. Yes. And so like, yeah, as he was, yeah. Because when he was on the ramparts, that's a good thing that I think of I was on the ramparts, yelling, Bard and the elf King and Gandalf, right. He is still in his robes in his traveling gear, and he's hunched and he's like, you can imagine him like this, like, you know, yelling and spitting. And now, what's come out of the mountain? Yep. Is the fierce warrior of legend. Thorin Oakenshield, son of thrain. Son of thrower, right. His guy is the real deal. Right? Like, and it's, like, so inspiring and so amazing that everybody's like, yes, we will go. Yeah, exactly. Just his presence is so commanding that they're like, Alright, let's do it.
Collin 1:46:39
Yeah, well, even even in a charge like this. Typically, there's the what there's the horn, that's blown to announce it, but it says even as his voice shook like a horn in the valley. So he himself is the one that's calling proclaiming, like, that's that's the, the signal to others around him as as he really is embracing and like you said, like the the Thorin Oakenshield. Yes.
Brandon 1:47:05
Yeah. It's crazy. And so then the battle really starts to turn, right. Because the Lord has now joined, and the company is joined. And it's sort of inspired everybody. Right? Enzo. Gandalf words prove a bit prophetic when he said there may be yet time. There may be yet
Collin 1:47:25
time. Right. Boom. Now, it was three paragraphs later.
Brandon 1:47:33
Great. Yeah, that's great. Yeah, now we got this cut to Bilbo standing up on the hill. He's up on Raven Hill. Because Bilbo as we know, not really warrior material. His battles are fought other places, right. But um, you know, he's up there watching and kind of lamenting about the stuff and, you know, worried about his friends. And
Collin 1:48:01
he was, you know, he's kind of,
Brandon 1:48:05
you know, weeping about this, that this battle is happening, and his people that he cares about are down there. And he doesn't want to see this. And he says, like, you know, I read their old smog been left with all the wretched treasure and these vile creatures should get it, you know, poor Bombur and Bollin and Philly, he's like, all the rest of come to a bad you know, I don't want them to come to an end. Right. And, and the milkman and even the elves and this is terrible Bullock. And, you know, he's just standing up here on the hill. He's helpless. Right? He's done so much. He's come so far. And in this moment,
Collin 1:48:40
He is helpless to do anything. You know? Just kind of watch everything unfurl. He doesn't like what he sees. No, no, it's a very it is a nother stark contrast of the two now change of characters of of this is the moment Thorin was preparing for and this is the moment Bilbo feared most did the least wanted to be involved in. So So in every other tight spot in the story, we see Bilbo able and capable of stepping up to take this new challenge on to adapt to rescue friends. And in this moment, I think it's this both this recognition of just the the horrors of war like this and the calamity and loss of lives and his friends being you know, just you know killed and everybody else who's suffering because of this and also him recognizing I like not only do I not want this to happen, but like there's nothing I can do at this moment. Like this is this is not other for me in this time.
Brandon 1:49:56
Yeah, yeah, just the helplessness of standing and You know, it's interesting that he is. At this moment, he's standing on the hill even far away. He's still wearing the ring.
Collin 1:50:10
Right? So, he is, like, not just,
Brandon 1:50:16
you know, this this invisibility, like, at this moment, like he's so helpless, like he's like, physically invisible, but also like, metaphorically invisible because he he's, he can't do anything.
Collin 1:50:28
Right. Yeah. So that's an interesting little Yeah, thing there I think.
Brandon 1:50:35
But and as Gandalf said, there may yet be hope, because he starts, you know, he like kind of turns into the gust of the wind. And he sees something in the sky. dark shapes small, yet majestic against the distant glow. By the Eagles have come have they? They have recorded Bilbo. He is very excited about this. He starts screaming and like yelling and dancing, even though he's invisible. So the elves are like, what? Like, the guards up on the hill, I like what well, and he's very overcome with joy. Because you know, this, this portends good, right? This, this is probably a good sign, right? The Eagles are coming. We've met them before we know how majestic and mighty and and they are. You know, we the readers of lore know that these are the servants of Monterey himself. Calm, right of their own will to help. And you know, Bilbo might not know that, but that's fine. And he's so excited. And we end on a bit of a cliffhanger. Because he gets smacked on the head with a stone high gets knocked out.
Collin 1:52:09
It's great. It's fantastic. It's truly it. Again, it's it's just common, again of like, all this stuff going on. And he's the really only one at this point that seeing what's going on. Yeah. And then,
Brandon 1:52:25
and he lights out. Yeah, he also came up to the Hill, basically. So this wouldn't happen. Yeah. Right. It mentioned earlier that he isn't visible. But he wanted to get out of the way because you never know if somebody could bump into you or you get whacked on accident. So he came all the way up here specifically to be safer. gets whacked on the edge with a rock or something and gets knocked out. That's right at the culmination of the battle, right when the tide is turning. Right when hope was returned. bam, boom. Knocked down.
Collin 1:53:03
You are not part of this.
Brandon 1:53:06
Yeah, like the ultimate, like, slap in the face like is helplessness is, like, confirmed. Because now he's not even conscious. It's what's going on?
Collin 1:53:20
Yeah, it's pretty funny.
Brandon 1:53:26
That's where That's where we're stuck. That's where we gotta wait. Right? cliffhanger. Right? More cliffhangers from talking right? Tune in next week or
Collin 1:53:41
a see to see what Bilbo doesn't do. Oh, Joe. Yes.
Brandon 1:53:45
We get the recap here. And that'll be it. That'll be it will be done. Done. We'll wrap
Collin 1:53:51
up and give our opinions. We may even even touch on our thoughts and relationship to the to the to the movies that may or may not exist or be real.
Brandon 1:54:02
I saw meme the other day. That there was like that basically was like, Oh, you watch the Rings of Power. It now you think the habits good? Oh, yeah, I see.
Collin 1:54:17
All coming together. Yeah.
Brandon 1:54:24
Yeah, that'd be good. Because I'm going to end up good. Yeah, I think just Yeah. And
Collin 1:54:29
we can see how much time we have. We don't have Well, yeah. Okay, well, I Yeah, it'll be be a lot lot to look forward to.
Brandon 1:54:39
All right. Yeah, we can do it. We can do the movie exquisite and the week after if you want to.
Collin 1:54:43
Okay, yeah, we can see we can see what we have.
Brandon 1:54:48
timewise but we could do that if you wanna do that. And when the books finish, then kind of like closing thoughts. And then the week after that can be like, comparative,
Collin 1:54:57
that would probably be best given. Yeah, I think I'd be a big help. verbose we tend to be on these things no never not either. This is going to be a tight 45 minute episode. I mean I can No I can do this.
Brandon 1:55:09
That's what we can promise our listeners it will never be a tight 45 minutes so
Collin 1:55:13
never be a lot of words. That's for sure add on that bombshell. Love you
